cooling fans wouldnt come on today...?

(yes, i tried searching 1st...to no avail...)

after my first rally-x run today i left the car momentarily with engine running (3 mins max) and got back in to park the car, when i got in, the temp gauge was waaaay up...never had that happen before...

coolant boiling out the overflow tank, the whole 9 yards..

parked and ran the heater fan to help...temp cooled down immediately thank god (air temp approx 2 deg c= about 35 deg f)

fans werent working...checked for a wire having come loose...nope
checked fuses...nope, all good
relays...nope, good too

fans have ALWAYS worked as subaru intended until today, subsequent runs showed no further high temp issues (less than 2 mins each run with approx 1 hr in between)

15 min drive home was fine too

so is there any other sensor besides the one above #5 cylinder that needs to be found/checked?

obviously, i will be checking that one first, since it is accessible and (hopefully) is the culprit!!

is there an easy way to FORCE the fans to come-on?

ie: pull the wire off the sensor maybe?

or perhaps activate the a/c? (a/c pump condensor etc has been removed since it was all shot anyway...) but by engaging the a/c circuit via the hvac controls, would the system automatically engage engine fans do to the increased load?

if all-else fails, i'll just run a wire/relay/ switch to the interior and turn the fans on manually...

or maybe 2 switches to the individual fans and halve the load on my new circuit(s)

Check the A/C fuse located right next to the FWD fuse slot

Agreed. When my fans weren't working, the AC fuse was blown.

So was it the fuse?

I've had non-working fans for a year now at least and all my fuses are fine, though I can't get into the sealed ones.

I figure I must have blew the motors with moisture/coolant due to the radiator leaking profusely before I sorted that out.

You may want to check the actual wiring to them. I'm not sure if they use salt or more sand up there, but corrosion can eat the wires and connections. It happened on my parts car that I had.

Yeah this thread is giving me a place to start but I still have to track things down since I've never messed with the temp sensor before.
I'm not sure if there is any wiring that is subject to road salt, though.
I do think the problem coincided with a major coolant leak.

Re: cooling fans wouldnt come on today...?

hi folks!

i just got home from (nearly) 3 months away working...

turns out the a/c fuse was missing...d'oh !!

(my mind is running through the sequence of events when i removed the a/c compressor etc...did i actually REMOVE the fuse to "kill" the a/c circuit??)

hmmmmmmmm....

anyhoo...re-installing the fuse fixed the problem immediately of course...!

silly me!!
