dual range forester/outback 5 speed boxes
im thinking they would be a good box for crusing/parking lot speeds
and just to be different . also the US dont have dual range manual boxes so there may be a small market for them maybe ??

I test drove a dual range 1800cc legacy yesterday.
I wasnt so fussed with it. trying to drive it normally. The grate was so close you could try going into 3rd and go right into 5th.
It didnt change as nicely as compaired to a load of other 1989/90,91 legacys I test drove.
Drual range out of a RX was nicer to use Ive found.
Intresting thing ive found is you can get a part time 4wd gbox on a legacy.

They are very very rare here

ive been a passenger in one of the d/range foresters they seem to be pretty good gear change and acceleration wise .so they might be alright ??

my bro has an 89 lib/leg wagon with d/range (i dont think he has ever used it tho) i have breifly and it was fairly smooth although i did the same upshifted straight from 2nd to 5th .
i havent seen (in person) let alone drove an rx here and ive never heard of part time 4wd box do you mean like the leones ie. fwd with 4wd lever ?

heres the wiki link for foresters it says the first gen had dual range manual option on all models bar the GT

Re: ebay goodies not what i was looking for but still cool

My experience with the dual range boxes is from my old RX Leone rally car. When in low range, the drive goes through a very weak drop gear, and they consequently break all the time.

For crawling around, they aren't even that good because the drop gear is only about 1.5:1 vs 2:1 for serious off roaders.

Most of the newer boxes, as long as they aren't from an STI RA have nice tall cruisy gears.

If you want to be unique...check out the new 6 speeds in the lastest Outbacks. It's not the normal STi 6 speed, so won't be as heavy...and the ratios are VERY cruisy. Not sure how you'd get your hands on one, but I'd expect they'll be coming in via importers this year.

Just my few cents.

Heres a pic of the Part time 4wd on my new 1990 Mi 4WD JDM Legacy.
Its more like the part time 4WD like of a 1987 Vortex I had etc

Did you have the old turbo RX?
I had been talking to a guy a while back that had owned possums old RX rally car. The whole time he had it he never blown the gearbox in it

Do you know if those new 6 speed gearboxs come with Dual range?
They do mount in a completely different places compaired to all the older subarus so would be much harder to retro fit into something else. Be intresting to see it tho.

Re: ebay goodies not what i was looking for but still cool

Part time is a vacuum operated diff lock. It engages via a solenoid that locks the centre diff. In the old RX case it was what selected 4WD vs FWD, but in the later boxes, I wonder whether they still had the AWD viscous centre diff or not?

Was the Legacy FWD until you engaged this? If so, the it's like the RX. In the RX I was always having trouble when it was locked trying to do u-turns...can't do them.

I don't know if dual range is offered on the new 6 speeds. Looking at the Subaru website it doesn't appear that they are.

I blew up 3 gearboxes on my RX...all from operating in low range. Maybe I was making more power than Possum?? (no I wasn't). Most of the guys who ran them ended up putting in Legacy 5 speeds to solve the problem.

If anybody wants a Forester GT box, I've got one. Good cruisy ratios. Also have a 4.444 matching rear diff.

cheers,
Matt

Re: ebay goodies not what i was looking for but still cool

That's good to know.

The XT box (2004 model Turbo) I have is

1st 3.454
2nd 1.947
3rd 1.366
4th 0.972
5th 0.738
Final drive 4.444
No dual range

(ratios are much more suited to highers speeds)

Cheers,
