Rear differential removal?

I did a quick search about removing the rear diff. It's been about 2 years since i drove my car since the diff blew or been on this site. But i think its time to resurect the dead and get the rear diff replaced. I have a parts car that i plan to remove the diff from but I was wondering before i start down that path, are there any writeups on the removal or anywone with experience of the removal. Easy? Hard?

And just shooting it out there, is there a need for svx parts. I don't know what exactly is good with the parts car. came from a wreckers and i was able to drive it before the engine was removed (before we got the car). Not sure of the year, and the body is pretty banged up, but there is a rear spoiler and maybe some good panels. Just no engine, dash is all taken apart, and sitting in the car. Let me know and maybe i can remove some parts when i do the diff.

Not a whole lot to it. I haven't taken out an SVX diff, but I have done an Outback's. The trickiest part was getting the axles out. The long lateral link bolt absolutely would not come out of the knuckle, so we tried removing the two bolts from the strut and pulling the knuckle down. No dice. In the end we had to dismantle the axles on the car and leave the stubs in the knuckles, then pull the axles out of the diff. After that it's all nuts and bolts.

It's not too different than an OB/Legacy.
  • Undo the 4x12mm bolts attaching the drive shaft
  • Remove the 2x17mm nuts attaching the rear of the diff to the crossmember
  • Use a prybar to pop the inner joints of the axles out of the diff, do not try to pull the stubs the whole way out, just pop them out about 1/2". Sometimes it takes some heavy prying and it's easier to put some leverage on it while the diff is still secure.
  • Secure the diff with a jackstand or a friend and remove the 4x17mm bolts holding the front of the diff to the crossmember. Start with the outer two, then get the inner two long bolts. The outers hold the bracket to the subframe, the inners hold the bracket and diff to the subframe.
  • As you lower the diff and move it forward, you'll have room to slide the axle stubs the rest of the way out.
