Angry Brake help....

I'll start from the beginning... About this time last year my Claret SVX started squeaking when coming to a stop. It got worse as I kept driving. Brake pads were fine. With the help of some of the people on the forum, I narrowed it down to the seals leaking in the calipers. OT sent me a used caliper for the front. I replaced that and some of the squeaking had stopped. Then I replaced one of the calipers on the rear. That one silenced but the others were squeaking. It seemed that every caliper was leaking. No surprise since this is a 16 year old car. So I decided to get brand new calipers all around. While I was at it, I decided to get new d/s rotors and ss lines. I wanted to upgrade the brakes anyway, so I felt this was the best time.

Now I have a new problem. When coming to a gradual stop or slowly accelerating from a stop, I hear a loud screeching. Like nails scratching a chalkboard. OT recommend I check to make sure the heat shield wasn't rubbing against the rotor. I checked and nothing is rubbing against the rotor. I pushed the heat shield away anyway. I drove the car around my driveway to see if it went away. All seemed fine. I took the car out this morning and the screeching has started again. I'm getting impatient with this car right now. I don't even want to drive it because every time I come to a stop I'm clenching my teeth at the sound. Help?

Re: Brake help....

If you do a few 60-0 stops, it might wear down whatever is causing the screeching sound.

Re: Brake help....

Can you determine an individual corner that the sound is coming from? That might help in the diagnosis of the problem

Sounds like the passenger side rear, but I am not certain.

I'm going to try and drive the car up to Tom's tomorrow. That may be my only free day for awhile.

Re: Brake help....

I had a similar problem. I know this might sound impossible, but I actually over tightened the bottom bolt on the caliper. It did not bottom out, it just protruded far enough to touch the rotor. Can't hurt to check.

Re: Brake help....

I had this problem and it turned out to be a pad guide/slide. It would be fine for a little while then things would heat up some and it would start rubbing on the flat edge of the rotor.

It would only do this when slowing to a stop, not while slowing or light braking.

May not be your problem but it would be worth a look.

Re: Brake help....

The replacement calipers came with new slides, but now that you guys mention it the new mounting bolt for the right rear was different than the standard bolt...
I'll find out today.

Thanks Tom. Turned out to be the passenger front clip draging on the rotor. It was kind of strange, but it is fixed. For once, my brakes are actually quiet.
