That's good to hear, in a way.
Sorry, I'm not smiling at your increased consumption, I'm merely happy that the 4.44 change alone did not bring things this far down in consumption. You might not have seen it Rebecca, but there is a recent thread about poor consumption and possible causes. In no specific order, here are a number of possible causes: Bad MAF Bad O2 sensors [bad or dirty] TPS adjustment not right. Clutches starting to slip in gearbox. Dirty injectors. Clogged airfilter. Brake pistons holding the brakes on after application because rubber seals damaged and pistons can't retract freely. Like any troubleshooting list, approach this by checking the easy and cheap things first. These would be things like a dirty air filter or fuel filter. Or checking the TPS. If your miles are high enough, say 80K plus, then it would be prudent anyway to strip off the calipers and do a refurb on the seals, ensuring the pistons are smooth and shiny for retraction while doing the job. O2 or MAF or brakes would be my "Order of Suspicious Merit" Joe

Really??
Actually it is very reasonable to assume that you would get fewer miles per gallon with the 4.44 swap if you continue your usual driving habits. To maintain the same speeds that you are used to driving, your engine will have to turn at higher rpms---generally meaning higher fuel consumption.

Running the maths on it an acceptable touring mileage of 28 with the original 4EAT final drive will now deliver: 28/4.44 *3.54 = 22 mpg. It's likely that the tendency of the 4EAT to seek higher gears when changing up [based on the internal mapping] will have the gearbox running at optimal torque all the while with the lower final drive, which will mitigate the consumption loss of gearing drop a little bit. I'm just musing that Rebecca may have another factor adding to the increased consumption. Joe

Thanks. I replaced the fuel and air filters recently. I'm thinking 02 sensors. I'll probably replace them when I get home....and a semi nice day I was surprised that my gas mileage was that good. I'm not a fan of the high rpms though.

You could be very right with the O2s.
I know what you mean about the high revs, but Tom swears by the 4.44, mostly because they don't break easily. Ratios I did a spreadsheet comparison between ratios so that I could judge what ratio was best for the supercharged engine. The 4.11 came out on top, but only because the 4.44 was so low. For sheer grunt the 4.44 must be the best value. I figure a 4.44 combined with a supercharger engine would be something of a drag car for hauling ass, and probably sore on tyres. I'll probably build a special gearbox for the supercharged car this summer and I'm leaning towards a 4.11 for touring comfort. I had the 4.11 box on my Legacy TT [270hp] and it really moved very well. The only thing was it seemed to only hold 1 and 2 for milliseconds. Joe

I cleaned the injectors on my 92, and replaced the fuel filter, and my mileage dropped to like 15 on the following tank, then went back up to 19. Next in line are spark plugs, as far as tune-up stuff goes. Then all it really needs is cam seals, timing belt, and valve cover gaskets.

In the past year I have replaced everything basically cept for the O2 sensors. The MAF was replaced about 2 years ago. So I'm guessing those O2 sensors need to be done I'll be home sometime tomorrow and maybe this weekend I can take care of that.
