Whine, Help!

I've got it up on blocks. Little, if any, whine until it shifts into second around 25-30 mph. Then the faster the louder. Crawling under to listen, sounds like it's from the rear of the transmission. That is, the sound is equal to both ears when my head is below the end of the trans., or slightly toward the rear.

So, I decide to put in the FWD fuse. As expected, less noise over all, rears are not turning. Until it shifts into second. Then the whine starts and the rears start turning.

I'm baffled, please help if you can.

Just saw this.
When it's in park, (and up in the air) and NOT running does the driveshaft turn easily?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, it turns easily. (parking brake off, of course)

Update

I removed the drive shaft. The U joints are a little notchy, but not loose. Center bearing seems fine.

After more testing with the drive shaft removed, I have to conclude it is missing 2nd gear when in drive. Going right from 1 to 3 and 3rd is where the whine kicks in. I say kicks because it doesn't start right away, rather several seconds after it moves into 3. Whine continues in 4th, but is somewhat diminished. I did use the manul shift mode to assist with the testing.

Reading posts to this forum, I'm happy to find that skipping from 1st to 3rd is common, a symptom of a loose brake band. I think I can adjust it, but expect it will not effect the whine.

I'll report back when done.

i got the feeling that the brake band may have snapped in this case, or it is worn down to unacceptable levels. THats just my opinion
