Why does this work?

I added some supplemental grounding wires (8 gauge) from the negative battery post to a couple of the chassis ground points on my Impreza and cleaned up all the contact points real nice. At certain RPM, I am absolutely certain that the engine runs much smoother than before. My question is, why does this work? I mean specifically (but not TOO technically, please ). Just curious...

Thanks
Mike

Significant Technical Input
Electronics depend on values from sensors in somewhat specific ranges. Poor grounds can result in those expected values being off-kilter and the computer tries to 'learn' the new values and work around them. If the grounds continue to deteriorate faster than the 'puter can adjust to them (and adjusting to them requires the computer to actually determine that something is amiss in the first place) the engine runs improperly. Add into the equation a loose or intermittent ground and things get really hairy quickly. Same also applies to poor signal and power circuits.

This was a quick gloss-over, but should provide an understandable reply.

Thanks. I tell you, for the five or six dollars and 15 minutes of time, this was definitely worth doing.
