mad, angry, scared, sad... a emotional wreck

Oh no... It has become clear to me that my beloved SVX needs a new transmission. I just got back from college and drove my car and all the signs are there: slight rpm flares between shifts and an occasional "slip-clunk" thing when you accelerate hard. I bought the car not even a year ago, i knew about the transmission issue but never guessed at the cost to get it replaced. Plus i was told by a Sub mechanic that if my 92 tranny had lasted to 110k i should be ok. The bad news is... i cant afford it, so i dont know what to do. I am going to have the tranny flushed and all filters/screens replaced, if this doesnt drastically help, at least long enough so i can try to get the money. i will have to sell me SVX. Sorry to vent my sob story, but i thought you guys, of all people, would understand.

Paul

Paul,
I'm so sorry!
I've been there, but I won't scare you with my experience.
I wish you the best of luck!!

As we've been discussing elsewhere here you might try having someone adjust the band also. If the tranny is just beginning to show signs of a flare this may help. It may well be worth paying the 1.8 hours (around $115, depending on your local rate) to have it done. At least it should buy you some more time.

I'd had mine roughly six months when mine went out. Only to have it rebuilt, put back in, and find out it was a Legacy tranny. I won't bore you with a repeat of the "saga."

I couldn't afford to have it fixed, but I couldn't bear to let it go. Bit by bit, piece by piece, I've finally brought my car back up to feeling like new again.

I hope you don't have to sell. That would be sad.

Hmm 5 sp conversion?

Do you have the technical skills to do the 5 speed swap? You could get that done for about $1000 and then you'd have an even better SVX when you were done...

Just some food for thought........

I guess it ended up as a bit of a fishing expedition, but originally I was just making the comment that I've been trying to find a suitable building. That or do it at work, after hours, which is a *touchy* subject. Most shop owners think they should get a piece of everything that comes through their doors. I'll make an announcement when I can get it all together.

If you can, send me your TPS and I'll test it out for you. If that is going bad it can really confuse the TCU. The flare thing is not good. I think it really wears down the clutches. Try pulling out the dropping resistor and see if it helps. Can you manual shift and not get the flair? Try backing off the throttle when you shift manually. Drop the pan clean the magnet, replace the screen.

During my last "phase" of difficulties, the TPS was replaced. Things went well for a while, then, the 2-3 flare reappeared. I don't know what they did, that time, to fix it, but they did. Then, of course, the AWD problem. A new controller, and all is well.
