egr system... does it really do anything on the EG33?
So, I pulled off the intake manifold this afternoon so I could do some maintenance on the motor and also just check things out. Got to looking at and thinking about the EGR system. The EGR inlet on the intake manifold is on the passenger side of the manifold. ok, so it supposed to let exhaust gases into the motor during low throttle cruising conditions, but has anyone considered that under those conditions, the IRIS valve is closed and any exhaust gasses that enter the intake manifold will be confined to only the passenger side of the manifold? So, half the motor will be utilizing exhaust gas and the other half will not. Seems hokey to me... I doubt its really even making a difference in gas mileage or whatever its supposed to do. Makes me think that Subaru put an EGR system on the EG33 only to satisfy emissions laws.

Maybe it feeds just before the IRIS valve.
I thought the purpose of EGR was to reduce NOx emissions?

I thought the idea of it was to burn up any partially burnt gas in the exhaust mixture. Probably there isn't much of it and three cylinders can burn that up easily.

Does the EGR system effect gas mileage in anyway? I pulled a code 56 from my '95 and I know nothing about the EGR system in our cars. Thanks in advance for anyhelp.

Most people don't understand what the EGR system does on any car so don't feel bad.
Unburnt fuel in the exhaust is taken care of in the catalytic convertors. Nik is right, the purpose of the EGR is to reduce NOx. The exhaust gas acts as an inert gas (only about 2% oxygen vs. ~16% pre-combustion), this allows higher compression ratios yet with lower oxygen the flame propagation is slower and combustion temperature is lower. So lower combustion temp = lower NOx and less prone to spark knock. Most cars with defective EGR systems will experience either spark knock (detonation) or lower mpg &/or performance as the knock sensor(s) will retard timing to avoid engine damage from the knock.

And before every one disconnects it,,,,
"To free up a few horses" It only opens when the engine is up to temp and cruising on part throttle. It closes when the pedal is on the floor, so it does not rob power, or hurt fuel consumption.

thanks you just described the prob I have. crusing along at 100 I let of the gas (was that a plane?) and bang error code 56 for one minute and then it went away once I was back cruising.
Sounds like I have my egr system to clean up. |
