swaps
Can someone explain in simple terms the meaning of swaps of trans? I keep reading about the number ratios etc. Is this a swap from an automatic to a manual or does it also refer to other changes? Sorry for being naive.

The stock auot has a ring and pinion ratio is 3.54. The auto swaps you are hearing about are 4.11 and 4.44. They allow for better acceleration

What does the swaps consist of? Changing the whole trans or just parts? Are these parts taken from other cars? Thanks for your patience.

The previous owner had the trans rebuilt. Is there a way for me to know what type of trans I have?

You could look at the sticker on the back plate of the rear diff that lists the diff ratio, but they could have used the stock SVX diff cover (labeled 3.54) on the diff they modified. However it the cover is labeled as a 4.11 or 4.44 I would assume that it was swapped.
You can also make notes of your vehicle speed and engine speed at the shift point from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th. Post and compare with other members.

WRX 5mt has the best top speed. The 4.11 is close to being equal to the 6mt in terms of revs but the 6mt is a little lower
