More tranny woes!!

My 3rd andd 4th gears were flaring and racing. I took it to my local tranny shop (reputable) and they said that third gear was in shambles and they rebuilt the entire tranny. Shortly after taking delivery it happened again. They put in a new speed sensor and an TCU. I took delivery again and in less than a 100 miles it flares going into 3rd and the RPMs shoot up 1000-1500 to go into fourth. Because of the motor racing I am getting 10 MPG instead of the 20-23 I was getting. The shop is at a loss at what else to look at. I need to give them some advice. They said they replaced the clutch transfer plates. Please.....what can I suggest to them to look for?

the first thing we need is a price breakdown of the parts they used and prices. i highly doubt they "re-built" the entire tranny because it would have been cheaper for them to get a re-man from subaru, and if there "repuitable" they would have told you that. No reason to put a speed sensor or TCU, I think they might be taking you for a ride. who are you using? aamco? cottman?

You need to check your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). This sensor will cause the flares that you are describe and it can kill a transmission very shortly.

Most likely if it is bad, you will need to replace it. Actually the only real check you could perform would be to make sure it is set at .5 VDC.

I will get a list of all they did(parts and prices). NO...I didn't use AAMCO or Cottman. I used Cherry Hill Transmission in Cherry Hill, NJ. They did work for me on other cars and were good. They are trying to help me, but I don't think they know the SVX very well. Cherry Hill Subaru did a total diagnostics and they got the error code for the speed sensor. That is why we replaced it. I had them try another TCU just in case the original was bad, but that didn't help. The tranny shop really wants to get this done right, but I think they are baffled. This is actually the third time it is back there since they did the rebuild. The fluid is ultra clean by now. Would adding limited slip differential additive help at all??

I'm assuming it was his 95 which I know all to well that Subaru won't do a reman for. Well you can get it of course but w/o a warranty. My 95 had to be rebuilt by my dealer.

It was actually my 1994 Lsi that was rebuilt.

Then I'm with pert on this one. Why didn't you just go with a reman? My guess is that if they did it cheaper than a remain they didn't replace everything while in there as just the parts alone and r&r tends to cost the same as a remain. I would ask for a parts list then of everything that was replaced. Then match it up with what Subaru says to replace. My guess is they didn't replace something. If that's the case since you've been driving it now, I'd insist on replacement everything the second time around as I'm sure you did damage to the "new" parts.

I said it once....but I'll say it again. You should really look into the TPS. It plays a big role in the shifting of the transmission. If the sensor was out of adjustment or had a dead spot.....it would flare the transmission to death.

Do a search on here for the instructions on setting the adjustment to .5 VDC. You should be able to do the adjust in less than 15 minutes.

Hi Michael, you say it flairs going into 3rd and 4th. When it is in 3rd, does it have any slipping, or is it only when it changes into 3rd that it flairs?
The problem could be either the brake band, or the high clutch.

If it is the brake band, it will flair going into 3rd, but run OK when it is in 3rd. In 4th it will flair when you try to accelerate.
If it is the high clutch, it will slip when you accelerated in 3rd or 4th gear.

It won't be the Transfer clutch, the speed sensor or TPS. They just haven't done the job properly. To say that "third gear is shambles" is not on, 3rd gear is the high clutch, so is 4th gear?.

Harvey.

It flares about 700-1000 RPm going into third and flares about 1000-1500 RPM going into 4th. It also races some while in gear. When driving over 40-45 ( I assume this is 4th), the RPM jump a great deal as I accelerate.

This is the high clutch slipping for some reasion. Worn plates, low line pressure.? Try unplugging the resistor behind the battery, to see if the increase in line pressure, stops the slipping.

Harvey and IwantaSVX point out two good possible causes, line pressure pull the resistor and TPS with a bad spot. Maybe you could borrow one but if yours has got more than 100k miles on it I would think it's bad.
