Headlight Bulb Replacement

Hey everyone,

I'm the lucky owner of a black '92 SVX, with perhaps one of the most elementary questions yet...I'm having trouble removing the halogen bulb from the front left corner. I can get to it, pull the housing out from behind the headlight array. I just can't seem to pull the bulb itself from the "casing" or whatever. Yes, I am indeed a newbie to this, but I'm afraid of doing damage to it since it's not pulling right out. Any tips for me on this? What might I be overlooking?

Thanks for any advice. Awesome site!

As long as your talking anything but the fog light both the 9005(high) and the 9006(low) both have a type of caseing/connector on the back

Thanks, that's what I figured, it just wouldn't budge. I'll try again tomorrow. Unless the guy who owned it before me made some weird alteration I don't see why that wasn't working before. @_@

It's pretty silly not being able to change a simple lightbulb.

First, welcome to the site. If you are standing in front of the car and looking down, unplug it first. If you need to, you can put a little screw driver in to help release it. Then rotate the bulb housing up to the right. It should be the same for both of the housings or bulbs. Good luck and don't worry about how simple you think the questions are, that is what this place is for.

Thanks for the welcome...I finally realized that I need to replace the whole "housing" or whatever that pulls out, not just the bulb itself. The creaky gears in my brain finally turned over and sparked epiphany despite my stubborn resistance.

So on that humbling note, is there a particular brand recommendation (this is for the 9006 low-beam)? The previous owner had these cool blue halogens, but I don't know what kind to look for in that regard. But as a poor student, I may have to settle for a cheaper option for now anyway.

Also, my fog lamps don't work...Do you think that would most likely be a fuse issue (I've replaced one of those bulbs already to check it)? As I said, I'm an utter newbie to this and not really a gearhead (at least as far as cars go), but I love the SVX and want to keep her up.

Thanks!

Nah, you can never say enough. Personally, I went for the Xtravisions. Basically just the Silverstars without the blue tint. The concept of tinted headlights simply baffles me...

Does the fog light button on the dash come on when you push the button?

I hope you know that for US SVX's the fog lights won't come on until you turn on the headlights.

Thanks for all the lightbulb suggestions...

Earthworm, no the dash light for the fog lights doesn't come on. I did know about needing the headlights on thanks to the trusty manual though...Any other ideas? Thanks!

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
My driver's side low beam burned out a little over a week ago. I can't recall doing it before, so I think that was the first time I've had to replace any of the headlights in the 8.5 years and 91K miles I've had the car. Is that common?

I got a pair of the Sylvania XtraVisions. Here's a rebate that will help:

$4 off purchase of 2 XtraVision or Cool Blue High Performance headlights. MIR rebate form (Sylvania.com).

$5 off a pair of SilverStar High Performance headlights. MIR rebate form (Sylvania.com).

Purchase by 3/31/2005. Postmark by 4/30/2005.

Both do not say anywhere that you have to fill out all of the nosy market survey questions.

Found deal at Pep Boys, but the rebate doesn't specify a store where they must be purchased.

Both rebates say they require sending 2 UPCs. But I called the rebate processor and Sylvania and they both said a single UPC from a twin-pack will qualify for this offer. The person at Sylvania suggested sending a large-enough section of the cardboard package so that they could tell it was from a 2-bulb package. I did that, and also wrote a note on the form stating that Sylvania told me it was valid.

In less than two weeks I received an e-mail confirmation saying the rebate "has been qualified." Now have to wait 10-12 weeks for the check.
