raced a Datsun (sorta)

my buddy just finished rebuilding and repainting his Datsun 280Z.. pretty ferocious car.. straight six, manual trans, RWD and a straight glasspack exhaust.

i was following him home last night and we came up to a hill with a climbing lane. I pulled left and next to him, he downshifted and floored it, i waited a couple seconds and did the same. i shouldn't have waited, but i didn't want to be the guy that romped on the gas first..

anyway, we both started screaming up to the redline, he quicker than me.. he was pulling ahead of me, but only at a rate of like half an inch per second.. i figure from a standstill he would've outrun me to 60, but we might've hit the quarter mile evenly and if i had the room, i could outrun him on the highway.

still, this was uphill, where the torque characteristics of a straight-six would seem to be the most useful

Maybe if he threw in a 350 chevy. I know a guy who's putting a LT1 into his 280Z. It's going to be killer.
