Question AT Cooler?/Synthetic ATF?

Close to summer here in beautiful Fresno, CA (90 to 108 degrees), so gotta consider high ATF temperatures. My questions for your kind help:

1. What is best AT Cooler, brand and size (are all 3/4" thick?)?

2. Should I run Redline D4 ATF (as I had started to change over to before dealer did AT service [fluid in/out at same time] last November [when they thought my rough idle/shuddering problem was the torque convertor!] or stick with the Dexron I guess they used at the AT fluid service changeover?

3. Is ATF temp guage needed? If so, easiest way to install, what kind, and where?

4. Should I go to the trouble of putting in a manual switch for the fans (for heavy traffic/ low airflow)?

5. At what temp should the fluid be at to be OK? Or, what temp should the fans be definitely on?

PLEASE GIVE SPECIFIC ADVICE (I WON'T HOLD ANYONE LIABLE)!
thanks

I'm thinking of doing Redline as well.

For me I run a Hayden cooler sandwiched between the condensor and the radiator. For the ATF temp guage I tapped in on the line from the AT to the cooler.

Pics can be seen at http://isuzu-suvs.com/svx

I'm probably going to go with a manual override for the fans cause it seems to run a bit hot in traffic.

Trans cooler

B&M 19,000gvw cooler for me. Sandwiched between the condensor and radiator. Works pretty well except when you sit in traffic on those really warm days. Its never gone above 210 though. I went with Mobil 1 synthetic over Redline simply b/c Redline says nothing about being compatable with any left over ATF while Mobil is. There was nothing that I could find about the specs of Redline's low temp viscosity or flash points and burn points where the Mobil had great low temp viscosity (so on the cold days that the car takes longer for the tranny to get up to normal op. temp the fluid flows better). As for its flash and burn points it was slightly higher than all the normal ATFs. Its also cheap. About $5-$6 a quart so I figure I'll just change it annually (every 6-10k).

Where do you get Mobil 1 synthetic automatic transmission fluid?

I've never seen it for sale.

ATF

I get my Mobil sythetic ATF at Autozone. Its $4.99 a quart. Pepboys wants $5.99. I didn't have any leakage problems when I converted. Am planning to change my XT over this weekend.

My Pep Boys on rte 202 in Fairfax (Wilmington) DE has Mobil 1 at $4.89 per quart. I usually buy it by the six-pack case. However, there is no discount for buying it in case lots.

Ooops. Sorry. The price in my previous post is for the Mobil 1 engine oil. I guess I should check out AutoZone for the ATF.

COOLER install

Do I have to take the radiator out completely (drain coolant), or can I just move it out of the way to install the cooler to the A/C condensor (like in Paisan's photos - he took the rad out)?

THANKS for your input!

Radiator

I'd suggest taking the radiator out as the top plastic portion is very crack happy as the cars age. By leaving the hose to the thermostat on and just moving the radiator you put a lot of pressure on the radiator there. Unless you just changed your coolant might as well do it again. That way you're cool for a while. Also, when you're putting the cooler on you might want to replace the ATF filter. Its pricey (like $70) and is supposed to only need replaced at a rebuild but you're already there. Might want to look into getting an aftermarket kit to replace it that works with an oil filter. Much cheaper to replace in the future.

I don't think you *have* to take it out, but I'd rather do that then risk breaking it. Also my friend who did the work likes to dismantle stuff (the dash, bumper etc) He was doing a bunch of stuff at the same time as the cooler so he took it all apart.

Or you can go to your local dealer and order part number 31099AA091 for $9.53. It's an ATF filter kit for the Legacy, and includes the filter, hoses, clamps, and a bracket. The filter's identical to the one installed on the SVX.

Heck, at $9.53 each, order 4 and you're probably fixed for life.
