Engine Pull, Head Gasket Repl., + + +

Hello,

I wasn't able to sell the '94 that I posted on here late last year, so I am about to attempt to fix it, if the block, etc. is still good.

I have the posts set for a backyard engine pulling setup, and got a 1-ton chain hoist. I did this once 25 years ago with a 454 and a 400 small block ('74 GMC 1/2T and '75 Impala station wagon, respectively), but I know this will be different.

I have found some good info. on the engine pulling, etc., here, for example (especially posts 3 and 10 by Hocrest):

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...removal&page=4

But I still haven't put together a lot of details like,

- what brand of head gaskets are recommended here
- should I just buy a gasket kit
- do I try to go through Subaru for most or all of this, or ?

I'm sure that's all here somewhere. If anyone could post links to other helpful threads I would appreciate it. I know I'm going to have some questions.

Thanks

That '74 truck that I did the swap on years ago is still running, btw. 190k+ unrebuilt. It needs the valve stem seals and O-rings done, and is dripping a little from the rear main, but I've gotten my $ worth from it.

Cometic or OEM would be your best gasket choice. If you are on FB, post this on SVX Nation. There are scores of guys who know how to do all of this there. A few guys are in the process of doing this now.

I would recommend sticking with the OEM head gaskets. Also, it will be cheaper in the long run to buy the entire rebuild kit from subaru. The part number for the whole kit is: 10105AA060, MSRP is $351+ shipping but I can usually get these for $280 shipped.

Ok, thanks. Let me get into it and see how bad it is. I'm not in a real hurry, so I'm not going to order anything until I do that.
