While that's likely true, each shop's personnel have different levels of capability. Our local Aamco seems honest and pretty good at what they do.

Just because it says 'Aamco' on the building doesn't mean that the people inside don't know what they're doing.

Significant Technical Input
I'd say that it depends mostly on the people that work in the shop that make the difference.

The manager of the AAMCO in Lancaster, PA has an SVX. Sounds like the perfect car to own if you manage a tranny shop...

Tru dat, homey. Unfortunately, auto repair franchises are not like McDonalds, where you can be fairly sure a Big Mac will taste the same in Walla Walla as it does in Timbuktu.

Case in point: I would not trust my mechanicals to the Goodyear shop in Evansville which is one block from my office, but will drive my car two hours to the Goodyear shop in Louisville, KY and have every confidence in the person who works on it.

i think im going not do the 5 speed swap too much work involved and not shure if its really worth it.."but 240 hp AWD 5 speed sounds nice and put in the hi 14s"

i went to aamco yesterday it was on the way home they where a joke they wanted the car for 3 hours !!!! and charge me 45.00 just too telll its broken and they have to rip it apart. i think not..

there is a family mechanic of ours that has been verry good im probably going to let him do it. he saying its going to be between 1,300-1,800 for a full rebuild and new torque converter.

i will probably have the valve covers gaskets replaced also at the same time since the tranny will be out.. perfect timing.

come to find out its the same auto tranny in the nissan pathfinder wich i knew.

i used sythetic tranny fluid whene i changed it last .. the old fluid looked pretty dirty and was changed around 25,000 miles ago i never had any slipage.

The rear wheel drive may not be working cause the transfer valve is bad, a common problem. You should leplace that and the other solenoids while you are in there.

I have thought about getting the valve body taken apart and cleaned but it is a lots of time job. May be worth while doing if a lot of clutch material has worn off. There is a small screen in the body.

If the planetary gears or front diff is bad it will be extra. A rebuild from Subaru would cover them both. If you've driving hard without rear wheel drive the front diff may need some work.

if your going to be replacing the diffs it would probobly cost about the same as getting the 5 speed from smallcar. They have financing available too.
