Re: 5MT in Colorado Springs Pull and Pay

About 5 hours. I was all by myself though, so that was a bit of a challange wrestling it out. You're not allowed to bring jacks out there either... so it took some special engineering to figure out how to drop the tranny down with no jack by myself.... but I got it all done and everything looks good! Now I just have to get the numbers off of it and figure out what it came out of.

Re: 5MT in Colorado Springs Pull and Pay

Alright, so the tranny code is 94-TY754VV4AA. I found this while searching for decoding, and it pretty well answers everything except what actual model it came out of-

Transmission identification codes start with a "T" and an example would be:

TY856WB1AA

"T" = transmission code

"Y" = that it is a manual awd gearbox

"85" = the transmission classification...in the case of manual gearboxes this number indicates the gear shaft spacing in millimeters. 6-speed transmissions use an 85mm shaft spacing while the current generation of 5-speed transmissions use a 75mm shaft spacing.

"6" = some reference to the transmission case. "6" is used for 6-speeds, "4" is used for 8-bolt 5-speeds, "2" for 4-bolt Impreza 5-speeds, "5" for Forester 8-bolt 5-speeds, "3" for 4-bolt Forester 5-speeds, and "7" for some Legacy turbo 8-bolt 5-speeds.

"W" = transmission specification. "W" is 6-speed, "V" is 5-speed, "Z" = AT with MPT, "Y" = AT with VTD, etc.

"B1AA" = indicates various details about the equipment such as center diff. type, front LSD, etc. and also about minor production changes.

Only reason I really need to know is I'd like to get a new clutch for it, but I don't know what to order it for...

Also, another question hopefully someone can answer, when counting the teath on the diffs, did the pinion gears ever change count, or was it usually the ring gear? Just curious as to whether you could count 39 teeth on the ring, and since you can't really see the pinion to count it without taking the diff apart, if there's any chance you can have 39 ring gear teath and still have a different amount of pinion teath to make it something other than the standard 3.54. I don't know how many different gear ratios they put in these things, but I would think it's a safe bet that if you can count 39 ring gear, then it's got 3.54s.

This is related to me trying to figure out what MY SVX has in the rear diff, just so I know whether or not I need to go pull the diff out of the junk car. The tranny I pulled has the 39 teath, and the rear diff on it had a tag that says 3.54. I haven't crawled under mine yet to see what it's got. It's a '95 base L model if that helps figure it out...

Re: 5MT in Colorado Springs Pull and Pay

I'm pretty sure the original 3.54 gearing has 11 teeth on the pinion and 39 on the ring, the 4.11 final drive has 9 teeth on the pinion and 37 on the ring, and the 4.44 final drive has 9 teeth on the pinion and 40 on the ring. Someone correct me if i'm wrong here

Yeah mine is 5 speed. According to the decoder it's an 8 bolt 5 speed, but it doesn't say what model or year it's from. That's all I really need to know, as I need to order a new clutch for it.
