Re: Transmission Issue.... need advice

Could be a bad torque converter.

Re: Transmission Issue.... need advice

Is there any way to find out for sure??

Is a torque converter something that would cause the tranny to act "almost" normal until it heats up... and then fail completely?

Re: Transmission Issue.... need advice

Sorry no good news Matt. It looks like the sprague clutch in the box has failed and is slipping.
This bit says it.

It seems weird that 1st gear works properly... but only if I put the gearshift in "1". If I put it in D (even at a stop), the car does nothing.
Have a look at this thread, from post 6.

Re: Transmission Issue.... need advice

Guess I'm searching the forum for a cheap used tranny then.

Or.......... listing it on ebay for whatever I can get for it.

Beautiful car... runs beautifully too.... such a shame this happened..... I'm not dropping huge $$$ into it though.

Just wish the car had lasted more than 16 months. I did everything right... babied it.... changed the fluids.... installed aftermarket cooler and filter... and the damn thing still crapped out on me.

Why not do yourself a favor and go with a 5mt or 6mt? unfortunately transmissions are the weak point in our cars. But if you invest in a 4.11 or 4.44 you will be happy.

Re: Transmission Issue.... need advice

Naa... this car was never meant as an "investment".... just a commuter for the wife.

We're moving to Texas in 8 months anyway.... and we were contemplating selling it for a few extra bucks to help with the move anyway. 2 drivers and 4 cars doesn't make moving easy.

I think we're just going to drop it on Ebay with no reserve... and get whatever we can for it.

Someone is going to get a REALLY nice SVX.... if they happen to have an extra tranny lying around.

That car is too pretty to part out... I especially like the second pic

Using http://www.car-part.com there are a few 4.44 trannies for around $500 in UT. Search for a 97 Legacy Transmission, then choose AT 2.5 Outback...

Re: Transmission Issue.... need advice

I just did the Subaru 4EAT class, sounds like the one-way sprag clutch is faling, as someone described. In manual first, the low clutch is used to hold the gear instead of the one-way clutch, for engine braking, which is why you have manual first but not D range first...

Re: Transmission Issue.... need advice

I just realized this was the car that I saw at Reading 10 when Tom and the guys still had it. That car is a great car. Really hope that it goes to a good home.
