I have always thought this was a production change during the year that was not model related, but....... I have been wrong a couple times over the years.

Lee,

I have been under the impression that the early 94 base model was the LE, and surpassed later in the model year by the L and LS.

Re: What were they thinking???

OK, here is my VIN JK1CX3235RK101110

Funny thing is I keep arguing with my insurance company about the VIN. They keep trying to tell me it is invalid.

Earl has it pretty narrowed down to being mid year '94 and quite possibly the VIN ending in 1400 from 94 is the first with the manual seatbelt/dual airbag.

Re: What were they thinking???

Lose the Car Bra the Rims and paint the bumper black and it would look a whole lot better.

I would spose the LE would not come with a LSD?

Re: What were they thinking???

Well win some and lose some.

But.....at least we are gaining ground (again)

We have determined that there IS an LE model ( "2" in 7th digit VIN position) and Mikecg has one.

That the L CAN come without ABS, but have dual bags and manual belts.

Still interesting questions remaining:

Do ANY L models come with ABS and/OR single SRS airbags with automatic belts?

Did ANY LS models come with single SRS airbag and automatic belts?

And the quest continues.

Re: What were they thinking???

Let me offer some insite.... I own both a 94 LE (Zomg yes) and 94 LS.

JF1CX3237RK101383 is the vin on the 94 LE.... if you check vin decoding it just says base model. It has no ABS one Air bag and Auto belts. One a side note that one has no ATF Temp light.

Now the LS I own's vin is JF1CX3451RK102883. What gets me on that one is the 345 (the 5) what does that mean.

According to the chart in the Subaru SVX Service Manual
the numbers in the 8th VIN position mean:

3: With SRS airbag and passive restraint
5: With SRS airbag (Driver AND Passenger) and manual type seat belt

AGAIN--the Subaru Owners Manual specifically identifies the LE and not just base model. I agree that other places refer to base model but as we all know that is not a true model designation.

Re: What were they thinking???

Lee,

The only way an "L" was offered with ABS was in 1995 and 1996, as part of the Safety Package. All Safety Package L models came with All Wheel Drive. L models were available in Emerald and Polo Green, Barcelona and Brilliant Red, and Laguna Blue.
