Ok If you all say SVX's Suck. Whats a reliable nice car?

toyota.
camry or celica or corolla.
you won't spend much.

3k will only get you more bills in an svx.

That's a slight misquote . . . SVXi are 10-15 year old cars that had a relatively short production run.

If a car has a multi-million unit production run, bugs are worked out early and are incorporated into the assembly line. Repair parts are cheap and mods are plentiful.

Our SVXi are unique, sometimes quirky and you have to be prepared to shell out some money for repairs. We've seen too many people find a cheap one to buy then turn around and part it out because they hadn't done their research. We were just trying to give you fair warning.

If you go back and read your other thread, there were some suggestions in it.

Get a 98 ford escort. pretty cheap and you get like 45mpg with an automatic. I know i had one.

Find a Legacy with a 2.2 in it. I've been abusing my '97 for close to 250,000 miles and she still runs great...

I am looking at 3 cars...a 89 Honda, a 90, and a 92. All Honda Preludes. Are these good cars? Thanks.

Why are you stuck on a Prelude? Look around at other cars, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru all have pretty good reliability records. This, however is a Subaru SVX site, so if you want to know about these other cars, visit their websites and ask. They can give you much more information. By the way, whatever you do, take with you our best wishes.

Did you consider a AE92 (Toyota Corolla coupe 1989-1992) ? Those are awesome cars, great MPG, great handling, decent power, really easy to work on! and damned reliable. To make it easy you should search around on autotrader.com craigslist.com and search for the cars you are considering (make a list) then search them and check them out one by one.. take your time with it . Don't jump into buying a car.. gotta be smart about it

-1 on honda. my sister has a 97 civic she has replaced everything on twice in the 6 years she owned it. that and I personally thing they are a pain in the buttocks to work on. I mean come on, they put the damned motor in sideways

+1 on legacy with the 2.2
Have seen more of them with 200k + miles on them than I havent

+ another on the old beetle. Cant beat the nostalgia and the gas mileage..just dont plan on driving on highways or in the winter. My friend and his dar are restoring one for his sister to use as a first car. parts are cheap beyond belief

But hell, you might luck out with an svx. If your looking for a "reliable" svx, get a fwd one and a good tool set to work on it with. the fwd tranny is alot less likley to explode. Example given...a Woman I know has a fwd svx with a little over 300k on the clock..Original motor and tranny. The tools will sure as hell help when (Not if)it breaks. Ive had mine since halloween and have yet to take it to a repair shop (Though I currently need to make some time to get under it and fix a few things)
my good friend AvPPoW has had his for.....Im not even sure, im going to guess 2 years...but anyhow, he has yet to take it to a mechanic, and he has had quite a few thing break, including his tranny

Or you can get even a little pickup truck, like an older toyota if thats your thing

Reliable? Old Corollas, 2wd Toyota pickups and Dodge Darts, w/slant 6 prior to '72. All three are borderline impossible to kill. Seriously! You almost have to get creative.

Combo of both? Depends on size, taste and $. Crown Vic/Marquis/Town Car. Corolla, Camry, Accord, Legacy, Sonata/Azera, Optima. Maintenance? All parts are way too expensive. Domestic parts - GM, Ford, Chrysler least to highest. Always has been. Imports? Depends on who owns whom at the time - see above. Maybe Yugo. Think about it, if you have one almost anyone with parts will feel sorry for you...

Old Beetle? MPG? thumbs down, by a mile. Parts prices? None cheaper. Pick up a 'Hot VWs & Dune Buggy' magazine. Used to be 8 shoes, four drums, four wheel cylinders, master cylinder and all hardware for less than $70.

MPG & cheap? Ancient Rabbit P/U diesel w/aftermarket turbo = 70+mpg. Old Civics, Datsun B-210 = 40+mpg and getting better as they lose weight due to falling rust.

I really want a prelude. I have looked at my options...I had a Camry...I dont want a truck. I need to spend under $3,000 Including..the car, taxes, title, and if anything needs fixed.
I am looking at a 1990 Honda Prelude. Know anything about these?

I'm tellin ya man, seeing how that 80's MR2 caught your eye, you'll love the 89-92 Corolla COUPE (AE92), not sedan. Its great on gas, RELIABLE, everything! Kinda the only reason I didnt get it was that I liked the SVX's more 'mature' look, I didn't want to drive a 'boy racer' car. :P
