Gas leak!! HELP!

For about couple of months I noticed the strong smell of gasoline would linger after I filled up my tank, but thought nothing of it. My mileage wasn't too bad (about 300 miles per tank) but it had been a little better in the past.

I filled up today and went straight home. I went out to the car a few minutes later and smelled the gasoline and noticed that there was gas on the ground under my car. I looked under and could see a slow drip of gas coming off of the lateral link on the passenger side.

I took it to a shop that was still open and got it up on a lift. I could see a lot of residual gas. It seemed to be coming from the joint where the filler pipe connects to the gas tank with some sort of a rubber boot or valve. This is held in place by a worm clamp, which I thought might be loose. (I also noticed that our filler pipe goes down and makes a 180 degree "U" turn and goes back up into the tank, which seems weird... looks like the U trap on a kitchen sink)

However, upon squeezing this rubber boot, it immediately became saturated with gas and the drip started again, so I suspect this has a small hole or tear in it. The one end of this boot I can plainly see, attached by a worm clamp, the other end dissappears onto the nether regions under the car. In the FSM it doesn't show a second clamp. It this some sort of press-on fitting or a part of the tank itself?

I suspect the tank has to be dropped (along with the muffler, rear axle and propeller shafts and the sub frame) in order to replace this piece, since I think the other end of the boot is attached with a similar clamp. has anyone else here had a similar experience?

I think it is No. 4 in this diagram:

I had this rubber sleave disconnected last year while changing rear brake line. You do not have to drop gas tank to fix.

Can you please give me a little more information on this? Why was it disconnected in the first place and how do you get the end of the sleeve closest to the tank to fit securely? (The end by the filler pipe has a worm clamp)

Still need help here!

I need to keep this thread alive.

Hasn't anyone dropped their gas tank or otherwise had experience with the part I am referring to? In the subaruparts diagram they refer to it as a filler valve. Is that the part inside the rubber "boot" or is it all one piece?

I was wondering if this connection was designed to break away in the event of a collision and seal the gas tank.

I know many members have done major disassembly of thier cars and was hoping to get a little more insight as to what to do next.

Looking under the car, I can almost see the other end of the boot. If I disconnect the worm clamp and separate the boot from the filler pipe, can I just pull the boot off?

I am hoping to press on another one in its place without having to drop any major components. I shows the Boot (or duct as thet call it) on the next page of the FSM under fuel filler pipe removal (Section 2-8, page 14)

John, I just now picked my Pearly to look at the boot/fill pipe.
On my box stock car (except for gears) you can just see the end of the boot that goes to the gas tank.
This is with it on a proper lift, and with a good light!
The worm drive hose clamp that holds it onto the gas tank has the hex/slotted end pointing strait up. (at least on this car)
Maybe you can reach it with a ractheting box end wrench?
Or maybe you can use the blade of a standard blade screwdriver to cut the hose clamp, by hitting the back of the handle.

The way to see the hose clamp, is to look past the gas tank,
in front of the rear sub-frame,
from the middle of the car towards the outside of the car,
up, at about a 75 degree angle.
If you position your head under the exhaust hanger,
with the bridge of your nose directly under hanger,
(the one just in front of the axles, on the drivers side)
you can just see it.
Good Luck!
And I know that you will use a cool light, like a fluorescent lamp, so the car dosen't burst into flame!
So I won't even mention that. Tom.

Tom is a very careful man. He really worries we might burn our SVXes when dealing with gas stuff. He told me I had to open my sunroof/windows everything for the ventilation when I checked on if my fuel pump was leaking.

Too bad, the gas leak on my SVX is on the opposite side of John's. I haven't had a good time to look at that so far...

Must we use any light to see even if we do it the day times?

Good luck on your fix, John. Keep us updated.

It was over 2 years ago since I replaced the rear metal brake lines without removing the gas tank, so my memory is a little rusty, just like my 92.

I probably had quite a bit removed at this time, so everything was much easier to see. I did have the clamp on the rubber sleeve loosened and sleeve disconnected. I think the filler pipe will move once you remove bolts (screws) from fuel filler cap area. I do remember being able to wiggle sleeve back on to the gas tank end of the pipe. I only diconnected the sleeve in anticipation of removing the tank which fortunately turned out to be unnecessary. Do you have a floor jack handy?
