serves me right for bragging about mileage

My car used to get wonderful mileage. I used to get at least 30mpg pure highway (got about 35 mpg during most of my multistate roadtrip last spring) and 25-29 normal mix driving.

Now I cant break 27mpg on the highway and am getting about 20-23mpg with mixed driving. This decline started gradually last fall.

Anyone have any ideas about why my car has gotten so hungry? The O2 and knock sensors are almost 2yrs old, just got my 180k service done.

My mileage hasn't changed at all.

Does your car still run/idle the same?
Have you run any fuel "cleaners" lately?
What about emissions?

Probably lower octane fuel masquerading as the good stuff. Anything to make a buck. Or maybe some new formulation.

Idles and runs about the same (mild improvement in how those feel after the 180k service, but still using same amount of gas), I dont like playing with additives, the emission test went perfectly.

Right foot gaining weight?

Tire pressure and/or alignment?

Transmission slipping (could actually be not that noticeable and still effect mileage)?

Driving style hasn't changed. Tires are a bit over a year old, I just inflated them a tad bit more, they're aligned. The tranny is a couple of months old. The problem is 6 months old.

I dont know if I'll even have gotten 20mpg this week. Is it getting worse? AAaaarrrrrgh!

Has the battery been changed lately? Do you live in an area that has regional reformulated gasoilne over the winter months?

Air temperature influences gas mileage. May or may not have anything to do with your problem, but it's something that people always overlook. It's one of the reasons gas mileage suffers in the cold winter months.

I would like to know what happened to your SVX. That is just so bad. I really feel for you man. I hope you get it fixed. Maybe everyone here can put their heads together and come up with the reason. I hope you find the problem and tell us about it cause I get 25mpg now and I want 32mpg.

I have two thing that I want to clean. The EGR pipes and the primary air motor. Then again it could be the ECU.

Temp's up to the 80s and mileage is down to 19mpg mixed.

Fuel filter?
Fuel pressure regulator?
idle circuit partially clogged?
vacuum hose leak?

My best guess is that is a vacuum hose that split. As it split grows, gas mileage continues to fall.

There are dozens of variables and as many possible causes.

I'd start with a manifold vacuum test, then a fuel pressure test.

Let us know how it goes.

Doug
