Overtaking

With good cars and drivers having to start in the back due to
various infractions or problems, there has been some good overtaking this year. However, some national television has been less than inspired in their coverage....showing Michael droning around lap after lap, when Alonso and Button are having a dicey time of in farther back for example. Retraining the TV people would help.
The article mentions another big reason: the tracks. Many of them
are very difficult to pass on. A superior car and driver may be stuck for ages behind a slower car. That's OK at Monaco...that's just Monaco...but redesigning other tracks would cost a fortune. Here is one take on the "problem"...

Dave Despain had Peter Windsor on his show the week before the USGP, and Dave asked him what he had to say about F1 being 'boring' because there was little overtaking. Peter said something that I just completely agree with. He said that F1 has never been about overtaking, ever. F1 is about amazing drivers at the wheel of amazing machines. In short, it's about perfection. Michael Schumacher in France, pulling off an unbelievable switch to a four-stop race and then winning with it, is perfection. It was thrilling.

Honestly, I don't care who wins. I just want them to be the best. Right now, Michael Schumacher is the best. A few years ago it was Mika Hakkinen and McLaren who seemed so untouchable. Someday it'll be somebody else. But in the meantime we're witnessing something we're not likely to ever again in our lifetimes.

Making a pass at it

I saw the same interview, and enjoyed most of it, until I heard Dave use the word "boring" and "lack of passing" like they were equal terms. They are not. Then came...

......"F1 racing has never been about overtaking"....

Really Peter? Then why in the hell is everyone wasting their time and money with a "race" then? The fastest qualifier wins, the second fastest comes in second...etc. That will cut the budgets down greatly! You will only have to tune the car for a couple of laps...heck, even a Minardi can last that long. People turn out for qualifying anyway, just count that as race day. Speed Channel covers qualifying....even practice...and you still have television revenue. Now you will have to throw in a pit stop with the qualifying, as the only real "overtaking" will be done in the pits. Wow the pressure....the drama!

OK...I have taken my tongue out of my cheek and put it back where it belongs. If I were a driver on a starting grid....set by my qualification time....what would be the purpose of racing if I had
no hope....no chance....no need...TO OVERTAKE ANYBODY? We aren't talking about Nascar or IRL where you can have two leaders per lap.....just an occasionaly pass here and there.
If Juan Pablo lines up behind Michael, does he just EXPECT to stay in that position? "Oh darn, he outqualified me so I will just try to hold my position. Perhaps my pit crew will actually put me out ahead of him so that I can win!" Remember, "F1 has never been about overtaking". All the passing is to be done by the...pit crew? Maybe I need to start learning their names....
Balderdash.....The greatest runs in all of racing have been catching up to, and passing someone! If overtaking is not important, then they need to start building some very large grandstands at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

I am enjoying the Shumacher/Ferrari freight train as much as anybody.... they are perfection at the moment... but let the television cover the real racing back in the pack....you know, where they behave so un-F1 like by "overtaking"!

I have great fun, riding out as an old codger wearing jeans and belting past the 'lycra clad' brigade on their super racing machines. All I need is a good head wind to really annoy them

Yup, it's Hockenheim. Michael's wife will probably be there as she only goes to his races now when they're in Germany...

Hmmm...I was looking over the current driver's points table after Silverstone:

Pos Driver Nationality Team Points

1 Michael Schumacher German Ferrari 100

2 Rubens Barrichello Brazilian Ferrari 74

3 Jenson Button British BAR-Honda 53

4 Jarno Trulli Italian Renault 46

5 Fernando Alonso Spanish Renault 33

6 Juan Pablo Montoya Colombian Williams-BMW 29

7 Kimi Räikkönen Finnish McLaren-Mercedes 18

8 Takuma Sato Japanese BAR-Honda 14

8= David Coulthard British McLaren-Mercedes 14

10 Giancarlo Fisichella Italian Sauber-Petronas 13

11 Ralf Schumacher German Williams-BMW 12

12 Felipe Massa Brazilian Sauber-Petronas 5

12= Olivier Panis French Toyota 5

14 Mark Webber Australian Jaguar-Cosworth 4

15 Cristiano da Matta Brazilian Toyota 3

15= Nick Heidfeld German Jordan-Ford 3

17 Timo Glock German Jordan-Ford 2

18 Zsolt Baumgartner Hungarian Minardi-Cosworth 1

How soon could Schumacher tie up the Championship this year?

You're taking the words a little out of context, Don. Nobody ever said that there isn't supposed to be any overtaking in F1. That's not the case. Peter Windsor just said that it's never been as common as some people think it should be.

Ferrari could sew up the manufacturer's championship this weekend in Germany.

As for the driver's championship, technically it'll be several races before Michael eliminates Barrichello mathematically. But realistically it should only take a couple more races before Michael will totally sink anybody else's chances.

< Peter Windsor just said that it's never been as common as some people think it should be>

It's possible he was set up by Dave's wording of the question.
Perhaps he felt F1 was being criticized by by Nascar or IRL fans, used to dozens of leads changes per race. If that was the case, then COMPARED TO THOSE then F1 has never been about overtaking. He never said that though, and made it out to be only the kind of technological exercise that I lampooned with my previous post.

There is some good, sometimes even great, passing going on, but if some national television networks have all their cameras trained on THEIR GUY lap after lap, or we get half the coverage with Michael in the picture...and no one else, then the coverage needs to change. The best pictures in F1 are on-board cameras showing someone setting up someone else for a pass. Turning out fast laps...one after the other...that is a great skill, and Michael is the best at that. I just want to see the skills of a Sato trying to pass a Webber. If the battles that ARE fought out on the track are at least COVERED, most of the critics will be happy. Some wouldn't be happy in hell with an air conditioner...or a Bud.

I have watched in the crowd at an F1 race....without the benefit of giant screens and replays. You can see only a portion of the track from your position. What do you look for? Changes in position from lap to lap! Use the old stopwatch to see who is closing or falling back. Love it! Or the next time around Hunt got around Watson and lets see if he can close on Niki....great stuff. The television needs to be done more from a fans point of view than whatever pressures are on some guy in the booth.

Lets look forward to an entertaining German Grand Prix!

Don
