Deepest Muffler Tone
I have two Magnaflow mufflers on my SVX and I like the way they sound. But I would be happier if my exhaust note was a little deeper. Heard the stebro at the Rockford meet and it had a wonderful low tone. Anyone know a muffler that could get me close to that sound?? I am not looking for louder, just deeper tone.

Any sense of how Flowmasters might compare in tone to the Magnaflows? I've been thinking about replacing the stock muffler with Flowmasters, but definitely want something with a deeper note.

Chances are Flowmasters would sound like poo on the SVX. I had flowmasters on an old fullsize blazer, and they sonded great, but that was a big cam big block motor. The SVX just dosn have enough cam to sound good thru a flowmaster, and flowmaster really arent that good of a performance muffler. I'd try the dynomax super turbo. It has a really nice flow thru design.... I have thought about putting in a big dynaomax muffler ebhind the cat,, and then a couple of little bullet mufflers near the back end. Not sure if that ones going to take shape tho.... I guess my point is, stay away from flowmasters unless you have a lot of cam.

I have done a dynomax super turbo and a flowmaster 80 and the flowmaster is definitely deeper. With the flowaster and no glasspack the exhaust rumbled like a v-8 at idle but it was way too loud when accelerating. The dynomax sounded too high pitched and made the svx sound like a weedeater. The flowmaster with a glasspack is the way to go for a deeper sound that isn't too loud to drive.

Matt: what size are you running? I actually had a picture in my head of my old twin three inchers, and the little 3.3 trying to keep enuf air in em to sound decent.

Well, I don't think I'm the Matt everybody's talking to, but I'm gonna butt in. I've got the KC exhaust on my SVX, and while the exhaust is a little bit of a high tone, combined with the intake I think it makes a great throaty call. One thing I would say, just out of gut instinct (no fact or theory behind it), that the resonated tips are to "blame" for the sound it makes. I think tips without the "cheese grater" inside would greatly change the sound. Maybe not, though. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

my tips are not resonated.
sounds like i may just need to slip a glass pack or two on my exhaust and check out out it sounds.

RE: My tips are not resonated
If you have the KC exhaust and it's exactly the way it was when you bought it, then you have resonated tips. If look into them you can see the little protrusions or slits that "resonate." That was one of KC's main claims on their web-site, they said it was better than a resonator (full resonator is more restrictive). Wait....writing this and remember you don't have KC exhaust....never mind

Right now I have the factory exhaust manifold down to right behind the o2 sensors, then 2 - 2" pipes join together into a single 2.5" pipe right where the main cat would have been. Then a 14" long glasspack where the resonator was, then 2.5" pipe back to a flowmaster 80 single in dual out 2.5" camaro muffler where the stock muffler would have been with tailpipes exiting at the stock location. I wanted to do duals all the way back but flowmaster does not make a muffler short enough to fit 2 in the factory location.
I ran the car with open headers - no muffler- for about 10 minutes. It was evil. I loved it but in about 30 more seconds I would have been deaf. I ran it with both the dynomax and flowmaster and no glasspack for a while (not at the same time). Very loud even when just putting around with either muffler but with the flowmaster it was a good loud in a v-8 kind of way. With the dynomax it sounded like a weedeater from hell. Way too loud to take a long trip in. Right now it is still loud but not tiring on long trips. It stays pretty mellow when just cruising around but it does get loud when its revved up.

i think mine sounds good, but i just want....
a little bit deeper tone. i will just have to put a glass pack in and see how it sounds. my pipes come off the motor stock into two stock cats. then instead of the V i had 2.5" pipes on each side run down into another cat, dual in and dual out, then 2.5" piping the length of the car and where eventually they run into two magnaflow mufflers and then finally out the back with thermal tips. it looks really smooth, very free flowing. i may eventually replace the two stock cats with higher flowing less restrictive cats. anyway my magnas have a lifetime warranty so replacing them would be silly. again i may just try the glasspack.

Is your car AWD or FWD? Also, where did you get the dual in/out cat? I've been thinking of something like that, but not sure if I can fit it in with the rear driveshaft. My idea has been to come off the Y with two 2 1/4" pipes into dual glasspacks, then to the dual in/out cat, finally to the flowmaster where the big muffler is. I've got a local shop that could do all that for not a whole lot of bucks, but wondering how it might sound and function. I put too many miles in the car to have it too loud on the road, but would like a little more musical sound when i have to get on it.

you nailed it svxter.
my car is fwd. i use the space that would normally be reserved for the driveshaft perfectly for my pipes. they actually do fit perfectly in their. if you look under my car it looks like it was designed that way. one day i will get around to taking some pics so everyone can see. sorry dont have much experience with the awd space issue.
