I would check the hoses first. Then there is an O Ring that could have gone. I would think a lot of other things went bad before the pump. I would clean things up and put some fluid in again, and watch to see where the fluid comes out. Then you can see what the problem really is. Good Luck

Wow! Anyone else notice all the power steering problems all of the sudden?

Who else has posted problems? I have read most of the post related to O ring problem. It just seems strange that their was no prior leaking or noise. In other cars I've had power steering problems that come on gradually. Except the busted hose.

I haven't seen the power steering unit since AAA dropped it off at the auto service. Don't how they deterimine the pump was blown.

My guess is that it is the low pressure side, it usually goes and the fluid goes fast. I had no leaks at all, and without warning, it went. As fast as you would add fluid, it would be on the ground. Not good! It was the low pressure return line. Cheapest of the two. Good luck. I hope it is that one and not the pump.

Sorry to hear that. Post a "wanted to buy" to see if someone has one. It would be less than $200 +. You may need it quicker than that though. Good luck.

Well I'm back on the road as I write. A whole lot poorer. The whole job 7 big ones. Had to get home. Mech. said PS fluid over heated. Probably need to change fluid often if hot and city driving.

Exclamation

This may well be blindingly obvious, so if you have already taken it into account, forgive me for labouring it.

The reservoir and pump are meant to have ATF inside, rather than power steering fluid. PS fluid is blackish/brownish, but ATF is pink. Which was in your pump when it blew??

Someone stated the reason for Subaru's ATF use, rather than PS fluid, was because the ATF is higher grade, and can handle higher heat levels without breaking down.

Make sure you have Dexron II or III in it this time around. If the guy has filled it with PS fluid in innocence, you need to extract it, and refill with ATF.

Joe

Unhappy

Thanks alot. I just checked and the new pump has power steering fluid instead of ATF. How easy is it to flush the power steering system? Can't take it back to shop that did the work. I'm back home and its 400 miles away.

Anybody got a How to?

Thanks.

I know if you blow a low pressure line it drains out very quickly. Maybe if you disconnect the line, it will drain most of it out. Then add the new fluid, and then run for a little while doing a hard over to hard over, and then drain and fill again. Maybe someone else has a better idea.

Question

I just dropped it off with my regular subaru certified mechanic. He hasn't worked on a SVX for 5 years. He says power steering fluid won't be a problem. Just check it and replace every year if necessary.

The PS pump has a 12 month 12,000 warranty. Maybe I should wait till after the warranty to change anything?

Question

Personally, for the small cost and small inconvenience of changing the fluid, I would only be happy with the recommended grade.

On mine, the correct fluid is writ large on the lid, and if it's the same on yours, the mech who filled it should have his butt kicked.

Considering your last pump blew because the fluid overheated, I'm surprised you are even considering taking the mechanic's advice and leave an underspecified fluid in there.. You have just handed over 700 big ones for the last mistake.

Earl's method is good, but a lot of people who change the O ring empty the reservoir first with a turkey baster. This will get out the PS fluid in the res, then refill with ATF. Drive it a bit, then do the job again. Should be OK, mostly ATF after two refills. Drive again, and do it a third time if you want it totally ATF.

Joe

Question

The turkey basting method seems easy enough. I know the weight of the two are the same, but I'm just wondering whether there is an issue with mixing the two.

Thanks
