Cool you found a WRX for $850 what a steal! JK.
What you talking about with all the work I got to do to this thing $850 should just about cover it. The pisser part is that now I got to spend it on another tranny instead of getting the parts together for my turbo system.

So, when I got my '02 WRX tranny for $600

back in Jan I got a good deal?

Jesse, I know a place that has a Legacy turbo tranny. They wanted $700 for it a while ago. I'll see if they still have it and get back to you if they do.

Later,
Todd

trans destruction

Hi

I know that this is not too welcome but transmission failure on speed upshifting is YOUR problem!!!

I hate to sound so critical but jamming a shift up does NO good (as you well know) and is not any faster...

Learn to shift rapidly, smoothly and precisely and your transmission will NEVER fail...

Sorry but its the truth!!!

What? If anything I don't think the speed of shifting would cause a problem as much as the speed of clutch engagement, such as a quick release. No I wasn't babying the thing I want to be able to drive it hard, but I know you can't do clutch dumps and AWD burnouts with a Subaru tranny, trust me I don't try (unless snow is involved).

Hi Freak, I happened to mention your transmission problem to the service mgr at my Subaru dealer, and he said the nut may have come off. Sounds like a cheap fix if this is it. Take care, BOBB

You gotta check this out

hey do you think this might be why the tranny for the car was so hard to find. I found this info while lookung for your tranny.

One of the first things I learned was that information and performance parts were very hard to find. Most Subaru dealers hadn't even heard of them! Then I found out why, because they are extremely rare. These cars were only made from 91-94 and check out these production numbers:

1991 - 58 5-speeds were sold, and 149 automatics were sold.

1992 - 6 5-speeds were sold, and 5 automatics were sold.

1993 - 25 5-speeds were sold, and 45 automatics were sold.

1994 - 170 5-speeds were sold, and 230 automatics were sold.

This is a total of 688 of these vehicles sold and only 259 5-speeds! Now subtract the usual road attrition and the 5-speeds have been lost to rally competetion, and there can't be more than 100-200 left in the country.

So thats like 2 rare Subarus you own throw in the Loyale with the lift kit and snorkel and the other legacy that mimicks the mating call of the goose, and you've got yourself one special collection.

Lucky me. And Bobb, Shane got me another tranny comming and I don't want to take the car apart again and have to push it around while I wait for parts so I'll take the other tranny apart later, but if it is just a nut then any one want to buy a Turbo 5 speed? Very rare!

Thanks Shane. You Rock!

speed shifting

Hello again,

Speed shifting aka

1) Not dropping revs or using the clutch between shifts
2) Moving shift lever hard/fast enough to beat the synchros

is disaster for a transmission and is not any faster....

upside: you think that you are really fast

downside: broken gearboxes, bent shift rods, chipped gear teeth, broken (worn)synchronizers, unnecessary repair expenses.

If you have a non synchro box like in a formula ford (Hewland) you can shift up and down as fast as you can [I have raced them for 20 years+] In the case of a road car, the trans is designed with synchros NOT to be speed shifted: once you beat the synchros which is easy on an older transmission, the transmission internals take all the torque and your box will fail.

Learn to shift rapidly, precisely and if there is any crunch at all, you are doing it wrong or there is too much internal wear in the box to accept what you are doing. As I've said many times before, do a solo 1 driving school (cheap but good) and learn the RIGHT way from pros: it will be the best money spent on you and your car.....

Hotshoe
