Rust strikes
So rust has struck my car. Both doors are affected. Seems like stone chips or something that has developed in the mid door gap between the panels. I belive the lower panel is some plastic?
This is pushing the repaint plans a bit. Subject to closer inspection, should I just get two new doors since I'm having a repaint anyway?

Re: Rust strikes
The description sounds like rust from the metal clips that attach the lower plastic panel. It shows up along the top edge. May be worse rust behind the panel.

Also, I've inspected these areas regularily and it appears to have come overnight.

Re: Rust strikes
Remove the interior door panels, peel back the plastic sheeting, and have a good look at the doors from the inside. Only then will you really know what you're up against.

Re: Rust strikes
I agree with the advise given. If you are just seeing it it may not be too bad but don't leave it. Also be sure that the body shop knows the correct procedure for removing the plastic outer lower panel so they don't cause it to be bent or warped. Instructions are in the OEM manual available from this site.

Re: Rust strikes
Good advise, I'll get onto it "fairly soon".
Parts take me a good week or so in shipping. Any clips or anything that will break with this procedure that I can just order immediately?

Re: Rust strikes
This image from SubaruParts.com is a bit confusing but, at minimum, you might need parts 3 through 7. Comments?

Re: Rust strikes
This is just so common on our cars. Even at just 40k miles, mine was suffering from the same affliction. Below are some pics with the plastic cladding removed before I began its restoration.

Re: Rust strikes
Id hate to see what my doors look like after I take the cladding off, thats why I bought a set of rust free doors, or so I think. No visible rust or bubbling to be seen, but who knows what lies beneath the claddings. Mike did you use bondo on those rust holes or cut out new metal.
