Impreza question

I'm replacing the pass side cv axle on my 95 Impreza, front wheel drive, manual tranny, 1.8 liter. The rebuilt axle I got does not fit. The end near the tranny is too small to spline on to the shaft sticking out of the transmission. I specifically ordered the correct part for my car, but the box had been taped shut and I am wondering if they had the wrong part in the box.

I guess my question is, does the 2WD tranny have a larger or smaller shaft that hooks up to the cv axle?

Thanks for any help.

-Mike

i-club

Ah yes, the i-club. I've been a member there for a long time, but I really don't have the same level of confidence in the information I receive there as I do here. I know some people on this board are very knowledgeable about all things Subaru, not just the SVX. There, I don't really know the people and I see a massive amount of opinion and straight-up misinformation being thrown around as fact. There's plenty of good stuff there, too, but I'll take my chances that Huck, Beav, or another knowledgeable individual will be able to answer my question here first.

Thanks for the thought, though.

Why, Rufus, I'm surprised you didn't contact me right away when you discovered the problem. You know what an authority I am on all things mechanical & digital. The answer to your question is, "Perhaps".
You're welcome in advance.
PS - Is that polo parts car in your driveway yet?

You probably ended up with an axle for a Loyale(GL), they use the EA1.8 instead of the EG1.8 that the Impreza uses, and they use a different tranny, which I believe has smaller axle stubs.

Well, I ended up getting the axle that they listed for "4wd or 2wd with automatic transmission". It fit just fine, even though I have neither.

The actual shaft is thinner than the old one was, though. I am quite certain that the massive power output from my screaming 1.8 liter monster motor is going to snap it clean in half.
