C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

I just finished installing new spark plugs and coils, started the car and let it run....everything ran smooth and idled fine.
This morning on my way to gas station, the check engine light came on and then I noticed the speedometer didn't work.

Did I forget to plug something in?

Also when I started up the car the power light flashed 16 times and this never happens..I didn't unplug the transmission resistor when I removed the battery.

I didn't check the code yet until I get home later today.

Has this happened to anyone before?

Re: C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

Where is it located? And would it throw a c/e code?

Re: C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

The speed sensor (VSS2) is on the transmission, next to the front diff dipstick, on the passenger side. It is possible you bumped it or something while poking around. It doesn't throw a CEL, but it does throw a flashing power light. Pull the code (see how-to docs) and see.

Hopefully you just unplugged it by accident, and it's not broken. New ones aren't cheap.

Correction: I don't think if would throw a CEL, but I'm not sure.

Re: C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

Here is a pic of my 6-speed. The speed sensor is in the same location as in the auto. It goes in the hole that there is a paper towel stuffed in in front of the dipstick on the right side of the tranny right behind the bellhousing. It is easily accessible from the engine bay.

Re: C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

It will throw a CEL code 33 if the speed sensor is not connected.

Re: C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

Yes I have a 33 code for the sensor..just checked it this morning. I swear I didn't take anything apart in that area, but I will check the connector again. Yes I looked up the price of one of those and it's 160.00 I think.

In case I need one, does anyone have a spare?

ALso, I noticed my fans run more frequently even before I turn the ignition on completely. can a faulty speed sensor make that happen too??

I've got a spare with me if you end up needing one. Check the wiring so nothing got pulled or frayed.

Yes, since the computer controls the fan speeds based on the vehicle speed, if it doesn't know the vehicle speed it defaults to always on.

Re: C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

Ok that makes sense, good I was hoping it wasn't some other problem.
The connector was plugged in, I did just unplug it now and one of the terminals inside had the bluish acid on the pin connector...I can clean them and replug in to see what happens.

Thanks for the input, I will be back at this tuesday afternoon when I get home.

Re: C/E light, no speedometer after coils and plugs installed

I cleaned the connection with electrical connector cleaner and so far the speedometer started to work and the fan finally kicked off. As of now I don't need the part, but if it acts up again I will let you know.
