Alternator Dieing

My alternator seems to be on the way out... The car has been having trouble starting, and the headlights dim when i come to a stop... Could this be caused by jump starting another car off of mine? Chris and I had to jump his car a number of times because it was sitting for a long time... Just my only theory.

Hard to say. I've jump started many vehicles over the years (did I mention I love my Optima battery?) and my alternator didn't die until earlier this year.

Its probably your folding mirrors. You better send them to me ASAP so your car can heal

I just replaced my alternator, and my Optima Red Top is also DEAD. I have to take it in tomorrow and try to get it replaced. I don't know if the alternator did it or it was just bad timing.

Bad Alt.

Mike, first things first. Are you still running the original battery? Sounds like the alt isn't charging it enough but that might be b/c it won't take what it should. Take it to Autozone or Sears. They'll check the battery for free. If you have an voltmeter you can check the voltage at home. Anything less than 12 volts on the battery when the car is off is bad. As for the alt. when running and idling around 2500rpm it should be producing 13-14.5 volts. How's your belt? Does it need tightening?

hey mike, i had the same problems. it was the battery. there was a dead cell, try testing it first before you go and dump the money into a new alternator!

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

Naw, don't do that before getting it checked. It'll only take 2 minutes for them to check it and its FREE!

Man I will never take my car to sears again, not after what they did to my car the last time I asked them to check the battery.
