i used the nifty search function and found this thread and i have a similar situation. i use and an alpine headunit with iPod connector in my hyundai and i will either move it to the svx or buy another alpine head unit. the hyundai has a double din slot with a cd player on top and an empty pocket in the lower din slot. the installers did the same arrangement and the iPod connector is comes out in the pocket where the iPod resides. this would work perefectly in the svx since there's a door to cover my setup. the only problem is they don't have an aftermarket pocket for the svx and gave me three options:

1 - leave the cd player to fill up the bottom din slot (it would be disabled though)
2 - have a custom pocket made (expensive?)
3 - use another aftermarket pocket (looks?)
4 - find a subaru pocket (i first thought the svx had a pocket in model w/o a cd player, but i now remember there's just a plastic plate)

does anyone know what pocket from the legacy works? thanks for your help.

The real reason is probably that they don't have any pockets listed as being compatible with the SVX. The car sold in such small numbers and is now so old that the aftermarket companies may not be bothering to list it -- at least for low-end accessories like a pocket.

Take a look at my SVX radio install guide. I fit the UP-K750 (universal pocket) in mine with minor modifications. I did not use any of the trim rings that came with it. It looks fine to me. There are pictures in my guide.

I recently got a UP-K800 that I haven't had a chance to test yet. I'll post a follow up when I do.

But basically, any pocket that fits standard ISO-DIN mounting holes (which the SVX's lower bay has) will fit.

Since Legacies, Imprezas, and Foresters all have standard ISO-DIN mounting holes for their lower bays, I'm 99% sure that pockets from any of those cars would work too. I haven't tried any of them myself, but if you find one locally (perhaps at a stereo install shop, in the pile of unneeded pockets that they inevitably have) you can compare the mounting screw locations to the measurements in my install guide.

Since the SVX already has a door, you don't need the pocket to have its own door (which some Subaru pockets have).

BTW, you can do the install yourself. It's very straightforward, and there's a smaller chance that you'll damage your dash. There have been countless tales here of clueless installers doing that.

My install went very well, and for the pocket, so far I have just added some packing tape around the lower part of the radio cage, before re-installing, and I'm just going to cut some black bristol board or cardboard to finish it up, no pocket needed. The hole left by the cage is a very nice size, with no obstacles to interfere.

That was done by our own member here - SVXdc (post before yours). There is a link from our site to his that shows that information. It is very helpful and informative.

Welcome to the forums! Sorry about your radio. I just can't understand people who bother stealing the stock WRX HU. Do they really look that nice?

I'm not aware of anyone who's tried installing a McIntosh in an SVX, but since all of the other "modern" Subarus are double ISO-DIN sized, I'm sure it will fit. It may not even need the cage mod.

The McIntosh has the separate amp, connected to the HU via an umbilical cable with DIN plugs. The power/speaker connection on the amp is via a standard 14-pin Subaru radio connector. I don't know the dimensions of the amp, but suspect it will fit under the passenger seat if you don't have the slide-out storage drawer.

You would need three harnesses for the installation:
  • An SVX 'forward' harness to connect to your car
  • A WRX reverse harness to make the power, illumination, and antenna control connections to the McIntosh HU (the speaker output wires here are "dead"). As with the WRX CD/cassette deck, this needs to have both of the illumination wires.
  • A second WRX reverse harness to get power into the amp, and to get the speaker outputs from the amp to connect to the car (to the SVX harness). In place of the illumination, antenna, and +12V battery/constant wires on the amp's connector are second +12V and ground wires, and the subwoofer speaker output.
See my post in the For Sale forum, or my homepage link.

Welcome to the site. Sorry to hear about the theft. I have lost a few stock units as well. That really drives me nuts.

If you get a McIntosh and install it, let us know how it fits.
