As many miles as I've covered on bikes of many varieties, I've never ridden a recumbent.
I hear they're difficult to get up a hill. Oh, and come on, man - get a helmet.

I have been unable to ride my city bike for about 6 months due to a medical condition (don't go there ) but I can ride up the hill next to my house at a similar speed to 6 months ago. http://www.bikefix.co.uk/phil3.html Don't worry about the helmet, the photo was posed while on a training course. The road is private access for the cycle shop. That isn't my bike in the picture, I have a HP Velotech Spirit but I can't take a picture of myself riding it so I will have to get one of the kids to snap me (with helmet) for the official archives. Maybe it is just withdrawal symptoms from the SVX, I just need some weird transport.

Recumbents rule. I have ridden a "traditional" bike across the USA, and up and down the east coast several times, but I think I have done my last long tour without my recumbent. I have a Linear (I-beam, folding style, underseat stearing) and the comfort, practicality, and lack of long term wear and tear on the back, hands, and the sensitive manly bits seems to make it a natural choice for my next extended bike trip.
Just be careful with your knees. On a traditional bike, there is nothing but your own body weight to push against, so the potential for serious knee damage is not as great. With a recumbent, you can basically do leg presses with as much weight as you can push, again and again. You can do serious damage if you don't keep the gearing low and keep spinning instead of pushing... Not hard to get up a hill, but a little hard to START up a hill

Oh, and one more thing... If you've never tried it, there are few things as fun as a long, fast downhill on a recumbent. Think 40+ MPH with asphalt 8 inches below your butt, heels, and knuckles.
If anyone doubts me, and happens to be in the area, I will gladly arrange a life changing experience for you
