Tranny question
Hello all I just finished a 2500 mile trip from Seattle to Anchorage and I have noticed that my tranny is slow to downshift out of 4th. I almost have to floor it and then sometimes it goes to second. Also while driving in traffic it does not seem to shift smoothly sometimes. Other times it works like a charm. Is the end of my tranny near? Would it help to change out the fluid and put Redline or Mobil1 in? I've only had this car for 2 weeks but already im glad I bought that extended warrantee.

If you have the stock radiator/trans cooler installed and don't have an inline transmission fluid filter you may have some blockage in your cooler. The early years of these cars had a mesh in the coolers that (accidentally) acted like a filter for clutch materials. That's why in 1993 they added an inline filter in the area of the line just under the battery. It is attached to the frame (if you have a Subaru one that is) with a spring clamp. I was told the filters are supposed to be changed every 30,000 miles.
By the way, I see your mileage at 74,000 and am wondering if you have had the timing belt changed yet. That's a 60,000 mile routine. Although I know one member who has gone over 200,000 miles before changing his (care to comment on that one Doug? ) |

211,184 miles to be exact and it looked as clean and crack free as the new one we put on. Remember I said we should just put it back in and check it in another 200,000 miles? 0260N4, Since you have only had the car for two weeks, I'd be willing to bet that the car is still getting used to your driving and your choice of gas compared to the previous owner. I'd try resetting the computer by leaving the battery disconnected for 12-24 hours. Downshifts are a factor of many things and I wouldn't jump to a bad tranny, yet. By the way, I'm on my 12th tranny (11 rebuilds). Welcome to the club and enjoy this rare beast. Doug

400,000+ On a timing belt?! NOT me, you forget that I've had one fail. Catastrophically! But you might want to keep that "old" one around for a spare, you could at least re-install it if something should (heaven forbid) happen to the one we just put in there.
By the way, not to steal a thread here, how's the car working these days? |

I will try resetting the computer and see how that works, I had forgetten about that. It might also be caused by the fact that I drove it 19 hours straight that day, I imagine it might have been getting testy, know I was.
