Question Diff or Wheel Bearings?

I'm not convinced that it's my rear diff that's making the noise.......at least I'm hoping and praying it's not.

When I'm driving the noise just comes from behind me but my wife when in the passenger seat swears the noise is coming from behind and to her left which makes me wonder that it may be the dreaded wheel bearings.

Is there a hard and fast DIY way of diagnosing exactly which is the culprit?

yeah, with the back tires safely off the ground grab one and turn it as fast as you safely can. If it's a bearing and it's bad enough you will hear the noise.

What will I hear if it's the diff that's gone?

Question Diff erent noises

Monzta,

Your wife may be correct on this. Can't say what a blown diff sounds like, never had one, but would expect the sound coming centrally from under the floor.

My suggestion would be the following; Fold down the rear seat back and push the front passenger seat as far forward as you can. Now sit into, or lie into the rear area while your wife drives the car up the road a mile or two. If it is the wheel bearing, it is so loud you will be definitely able to hear it coming from right or left side. If it is not noticably right or left side, then it is probably the diff.

[PS I would not expect the sounds to be much different, diff or wheel, it's a worn bearing you are hearing]

Joe

The transmission guy who checked ours out said that you could tell by swerving from side to side and seeing if the noise varies.

When you turn, the outside wheel spins faster than the other and therefore will make more noise. He could tell straight away that it was the wheel bearing - and which one. Although, it must be very subtle because personally I couldn't hear any difference.

Phil.

If it is a wheel bearing (fingers crossed) how much is it likely to cost to rectify? Is it worth doing both sides at the same time?

Costs.....

By the time you've bought all the bits you need from your dealer (bearing, 2x grease seals, 1x locking ring) you'll be at about £80 including the VAT. We've had both sides done now, but the guy who did them is an ex-Subaru super tech who now works at the local Land-Rover dealer, which allows him to do "home orders" on the weekend......... So fitting was £50 per time.

Phil.
