AutoTrans Swap

I just got my beloved and only 2 weeks later my transmissions went. I dont like 5speeds cause i only make 10min trips(too much shiftin) but i wanted to know if there is another auto transmission that would make it faster off the line? How about the tranny from the new outback? I heard of people taking the turbo legacy 5speeds out and into a Svx but how about a automatic? I can get a rebuilt tranny from Subaru for about $2k should i just get that and be happy? Well any input would be great!!thanks

JIM

Jim,

I don't know where Douglasville PA is, but contact Level 10, Inc. in northern NJ. They can rebuild your tranny to make it quicker and practically indestructible. But be warned, bring lots of money ($4 -$6K).

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
Yes you can use the Legacy Auto tranny, but you'll need to also get the rear diff(to swap the ring and pinion into your LSD Diff), and the Legacy flywheel & Torque Converter, All Legacys have a lower gear ratio ranging from 3.90, 4.11s, 4.44s, the 4.11s being the most common.

I believe this will make the SVX a much quicker car, though you'll lose the capability to cruise at 155mph but I never go that fast anyway.

It will also lower the stress on the tranny, which should make it last longer....but don't forget to install an aftermarket tranny cooler!

I think the Subaru rebuilt trans is the way to go if you want an automatic. There are many more parts included and the warranty is 2 yrs and the price is less.

However, you are only driving the car for 10 minutes at a time and the auto trans does not have any time to warm-up. This may cause the trans to work a lot harder as it pushes around that cold thick fluid. Take it easy on it. A 5 spd may actually work better for you.

I would also be concerned about the exhaust not getting hot enough to dry out the water.
