help with code po340 96 lsi

So the car doesn't start, just cranks. Pulled a po340 code cam sensor circuit malfunction. i checked the resistance of the sensor and it's within spec I checked the connector end and it also is in spec. So does this sound like ecu? Any help is appreciated as I would like to sell this car. dennis

The resistance of the winding in the sensor can be OK, but it is the magnet in the sensor that creates the signal in the winding.
The magnet may be covered in metallic bits to short out the field, or it has lost its strength.
Pull it out, check the face of it for bits.

Harvey.

Harvey, Thanks for the tip. I did take it out and the tip was clean.I wiped it off to make sure. Then I checked the connector, both pins All seem to be within spec. I have not checked the voltage to it yet.I ran out of time.I'm not sure how to tell if the magnet is 'weak'?

There is no voltage supplied to the sensor, the sensor generates the voltage, when the metal piece on the back of the cam gear, passes across the face of the magnet.
You can test it by connecting a meter across the terminals, and pass a piece of metal across the face, it will show the voltage pulse.

Re: help with code po340 96 lsi

harvey, thanks for the help. I did get it running today.I cleaned the connector and pins on the sensor with electronic cleaner checked the connections on the back of the block to be sure they were tight and verified the timing on the cams was spot on.So far no code.Gave me a good reason to change cam seals too.All the tests were within FSM spec.Fingers crossed.
