AMSOIL 10W30, but only after I did a full re-seal of the motor. I ran Royal Purple last year but wasn't impressed... All of a sudden my car was smoking on start-up and a bit at idle... Back to AMSOIL when she comes out of storage next week.

I only ever used Mobil 1 10w30 in my white car. So far I've been using Castrol 10w40 in my blue car and I've not yet changed the oil in my black car. I will probably switch to M1 10w30 for both of them next time around.

I only use 10-W40 cause of the age and likelihood of leaking. Should it be lighter or does it really matter?

It is possible that a lighter weight is better for tighter oil passages, such as the ones that may have gotten through the assembly line at subaru. But with the age, the passages have most likely worn enough to not matter., and 10w30 is not THAT thick of an oil.
I run royal purple 5w30 with a Mobil1 filter, and have not noticed anything funny with smoking on startup or anything like that. Then again, my rings, bearings, seals, and everything else on my engine are BRAND NEW.

Hi everyone, Mobil says 10W30 unless the temp goes below zero.Then 5W30 is recommended. If you read the owners manual it lists oils like 10W40 and heavier single grade oils if you operate your SVX under severe conditions. In preparation for our west coast trip last summer I filled up with 10W40 because of the high temps in the desert out west. Normally I use 10W30. In any case all oils I use are Mobil 1. They even have a high mileage oil now. I don't drive the old girl in the winter. Take care, BOBB

In winter I use 5W-30 of Quaker State High Mileage or Pennzoil High Mileage. In summer I am going to use 10W-40 of Quaker State High Mileage.
Quaker State HM has a surprisingly good viscosity index. The 10W-40 will not get excessively thick at ambient temperatures and will remain thicker at summer operating temperatures to help reduce leaks. HM oils also have greater cleaning ability and seal conditioners.
