Re: Cash for Clunkers... anyone ditching their SVX?

So this is only for buying brand new cars, and not used ones-even if it is last years model or something?

I ask this because my dad has my old 85 oldsmobile and both my mom and me think he should get rid of it, but they do not have any means to afford purchasing a new car

Yes. Unfortunately this only applies to new cars.

It sucks. (Says the used car salesman.)

You may want to have them check out the Nissan Versa and Chevy Aveo. Both can be had for less than $10,000 with incentives.

Re: Cash for Clunkers... anyone ditching their SVX?

The car you buy has to be new, but I think that a new 2008 (there are still a few out there) would qualify. The new car can be leased, but the term must be for at least 5 years.

The program pays either $3500 or $4500, not a range. The amount is based on the difference in MPG between the "clunker" and your new car: When both are passenger cars, and the MPG difference is "at least 4, but less than 10," you'll get the smaller amount. For a difference of 10 or more MPG you'll get the larger amount. There are other rules for combinations with trucks.

The "clunker" must have been "continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in." So no picking up a wreck just prior to taking this deal.

They're still nailing down the details, and have until July 24 to finalize them. But transactions starting July 1 are potentially eligible.

I could actually do this -- not with my SVX (which they do rate at the required 18 mpg, but doesn't qualify since it's no longer drivable) -- but with the car I'm currently driving (don't ask what it is. Really).

Even $3500 would be the best I could probably sell it for (and then, only after doing some repairs). Under this deal, I'd get not only that credit from the govt., but also the dealer's trade-in allowance (which the FAQs warn will likely be only the scrap value).

The downside is that I wanted to look for a "slightly" used car, not new. Maybe if I can find a great deal on a 2008...

Thanks, I saw that.

(You know, "SPECIAL ED" can mean something entirely different than what they intended... )

Beware: The 6-cylinder and turbos may not have a high enough MPG to qualify, unless you're junking a serious gas hog.

I think the dealership near South Atlanta had a 2008 LGT for $26k. I have a 1991 Chevy truck I think I might trade in.

Re: Cash for Clunkers... anyone ditching their SVX?

If anyone is looking for a Chrylser, they're matching the Government's incentive:

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/22/c...car-promotion/

Possibly getting $9k for an SVX makes this a lot more enticing. Too bad I'd never own a Chrysler.
Now if some other manufacturerers follow suite...

My SVXi only get 12-13mpg in town due to this hilly town. However, highway miles is about same as yours.

No way, you can save $10-15K off a used 1 yr old Japanese cars!! Japanese compact cars such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan even Mazda, no way you can save that much! Even Korean cars such as Hyundai, Kia, no way!! They're all getting better, reliable, good on gas, hold up resale real well! You can't even save that much if you get a salvage title Subcompact such as Fit or Yaris or Prius!
