Timing Belt Replacement

How can you tell if it's time to replace your timing belt? I just bought my first SVX. Two previous owners kept decent records but I can't see where the timing belt was ever replaced. Car has 120k. Has records that say "belt checked" and "ok". But no mention of replacement. Any ideas?

Re: Timing Belt Replacement

The timing belt cover is fairly easy to remove or pull back enough to do a visual inspection. I believe its just a few 10mm bolts if my memory serves me. The same rules apply as for a serpentine..... if its deeply cracked or looks like its old and dried out, replace. The subaru HO engines are actually pretty easy to do a timing belt on.

Re: Timing Belt Replacement

If it hasn't been done at 120K, I'd say it's time, if just for piece of mind. The engine is non-interferance, so if it should break then it's just going to stall and be really inconvenient for you but not cause any real damage. The likeliness of the belt just snapping is remote, the ones that have failed are due to siezed idler pulleys which burnt the belt apart.

Anyone got some pics or other visual indicators for us un-initiated?

Try here..... the Timing Belt procedure starts on page 6. This service manual is also downloadable. Hope it helps!

Re: Timing Belt Replacement

The Maintenance Schedule is in the How-To Documents. If it has not been changed yet, it is time. Remember how old the car is and the belts will not be in good shape. Here is the Maintenance Schedule. Good luck.

Re: Timing Belt Replacement

Thank god I'm going back to a non-interference motor. I have no idea when the timing belt was last changed on my SVX, and I'll sleep much better knowing that I won't ruin the engine if it breaks.
