Howling on deceleration, AWD related
Yes, this is technically a repost of my earlier thread, but I had confused two separate things into a single issue so I wanted to start fresh. Here's what's going on:
A few weeks ago I started hearing a howling sound. Thinking another wheel bearing was going, I didn't worry about it much. However, I noticed it didn't get better or worse when turning the wheel one way or another. That didn't seem to fit in with the symptoms of a bad wheel bearing to me. I decided to take it in to have it checked out. The tranny fluid is fine and the rear diff. is full. The front diff. was empty but that's a separate issue as you'll see. I did fill it up with mobile 1 75-90 synthetic. Ok, so now for the important info: 1. The howling is happening upon deceleration, most loud between 20-40 mph 2. It's gotten much worse in the last few weeks. It was quiet at first, now very loud hum/howl 3. It does not happen when accelerating, at all. ***4. Putting the fwd fuse in makes the sound go away completely (or at least I can't hear it anymore, so it''s possible it is there but much much quieter)! This is why I don't think the front diff. is the issue. refilling it didn't change a thing. 5. FWD fuse in = no sound, FWD fuse out = howling 6. The sound seems to be coming from the driver's side so...What could be making the sound that's no longer engaged when the car is in FWD mode? |

Re: Howling on deceleration, AWD related
running the front diff without fluid....more than likely you have overheated the bearings, the clearences are no longer within spec. putting the fuse in will change the load your putting on the front/rear diffs, changing the pitch of the noise.
I would rebuild the front diff with new seals and bearings. To start. unless you have access to a lift. then you will be able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

Re: Howling on deceleration, AWD related
Any chance it won't get worse if I just keep driving it for the winter?

Thats up to you. Do you feel lucky? Its only a matter of time...then poof! you need a front diff too.
Of course I could be all wrong. Not hearing the noise and all, but just going by what your saying this is what it sounds like.

Re: Howling on deceleration, AWD related
Any idea why the sound is coming specifically from the driver's side?
