8 Cyl SVX possible?
Basically, I want to make the svx able to eat anything on the street. I want it to have at least 500 hp. Are there any engine swaps/turbos/superchargers that can accomplish this feat? I know the engine bay is small, but is there any welding that could be done to remedy this and throw in an 8 cylinder? Money is no object, what would it cost?
I'm assuming a beefier transmission would be necessary too. What would the total job cost?

Ummmm....No
Lets put it this way. to swap in a non- subaru engine, you'll need to custom fabricate the ENTIRE drivetrain. If you plan on putting out 500 hp (albeit crank OR wheel) you'll need not only a stronger tranny, but a stronger rear, stronger axles, and likely stiffer rubber mounts all around to help keep things under controll. And then what have ya got? a 500 hp car on skinny tires with smooshy suspension, crappy brakes, sevral hundred pounds overweight (And you know how bad even 10 pounds will offend your girlfriend) not to mention a big v8 poised in front of the front wheels doesnt help the already noseheavy weight distribution. by the time you save enough money to make a super duper fast svx, everyone will have faster battery powered cars. And besides, there' wil always be some vintage r34 skyline w/ a bajillion hp to beat you..because every single one ever made will be imported to the usa by JDM enthusients Sorry to give you a harsh welcoming to reality...but the fact is, your question has been answered like a million times already. It isnt even really a question so much as a boyish watched too much initial D steet racer fantasy .the fact is,swapping engines won't help at all, becaue the amount of time and fabrication to get a 400 hp engine in the svx could be better spent on the stock engine block. And everything you could possibly NEED to know about the eg33 has been covered already. Tom is doing an engine build as we speak, which will adress issues we are having running jsut the little bit of power we are making. He says at this point he is concerned with how the axles and driveshaft will hold up, and he plans to take weight out of the car as his next proformance enhancer. So to actually answer your question...you need to start with a decent pile of money. With that, you should buy an ariel atom, or wait for some more eg33 developments.

ej22 or ej25 is the way to go. Personally I'd wait for the ez36. Money/time being no object and all.

If money is truly no object, it's all possible - however I think at some point you have to ask yourself what is the point? The SVX is what it is. Some of the members such as Tom and LAN are doing amazing things with it, and although I understand very little of what they are talking about, it's very impressive. If speed is the foremost consideration, it seems they are really pushing the envelope with what the car is.
If you want your SVX to eat up ANYTHING on the street, maybe what you want isn't a SVX?

Hmm, I have an idea...
Grab an engine from an F-15 from the local airbase... repaint the front of the car like a shark with an open mouth... and put big *ss spears in front... don't forget the "WARNING: JET WASH!" sign in the back... so it is readable from 150feet or more. I would also recommend a set of wings... in case you do go airborne That will eat up everything in front and burn up everything behind you. With a tad bit of sarcasm , -Sov13t.

The flexibility of modified SVX's to do things they were never intended to do is interesting and a tribute to the creative individuals who play with them. Most of our eforts have been relatively low cost, but have tried to amplify certain characteristics of the car without changing it's basic nature.
Benebob and Hocrest, and SVXRide built credible autocrossers. My car has turned out to be a passable track day ride, and Tom Johnson's car is showing real promise as a drag-racer. But all of these cars are based on keeping the essence of the SVX. The most successful tuner cars all have that approach. For example, there was a gorgeous 350Z at Pocono this weekend, blowing away everybody. The guy had about $90k in it. A twin-turbo engine built by Vinny Ten, complete chassis rebuild by Performance Motorsport. Over 500 bhp at the wheels, and about 2600 lbs., completely outran the several Z06's and the lone Viper that were there. So if money is no object, get Vinny Ten to build you a Supra or a 350Z, or maybe even build that mythical twin-turbo SVX. If you want a V8 SVX, forget about using a real one. Get a tube frame, with a crate engine, a Turbo Hydramatic, a Ford 9" ls rear-end, and a fiberglass copy SVX body. It'll work better, cost less, and be more reliable. If you want, I'm sure you can find some SVX interior parts, seats, etc. on EBay. I hear there's this guy in Vineland, NJ with all sorts of parts.

It should be very possible to put a LSx engine and transmission in the SVX. The Stock R160 should last a while if you use tires that fit in the stock rear flares and drive properly. If doing it for dragracing a tubbed back 1/2 and aftermarket ford 8.8" solid axle would be the way to go.
However I might pointout that starting with a Mustang or camaro will be cheaper unless you are a master fabricator, which I'm sure you are not since you asked about how to do it. Dropping $10K for a LS1 camaro is a good way to go fast cheap. Other good choices are Mustangs and Ford lightnings. A "different" choice but one that is cheap to start and gets you 370+ HP stock is the 1998 XJR. Just find one with the timing chain tensioners replaced before you buy it. Uses the same eaton blower as the 2003-2004 Mustang cobra and thus has pulleys availble. Stock rear end is super tough, just don't do burnouts even though its very easy and very fun since they will puke the diff with pegleg burnouts. LSD rear diffs avalible. Mercedes 5spd auto is very tough, but slow shifting. No idea on the current pricing of the C5 corvette's but thats also a great choice. |

It get to the point, that if you want to go real fast quick, find a car that will do it. The SVX is not a dragster. It is a grand touring car with style and comfort. If you want the other kind of car, look for one that is ment to do it.

If money is no object, the SVX can be made really fast fairly easily. Weight is thine enemy. Remove every body panel and make it out of carbon fiber. Also, make aluminum suspension components. It should go like stink after that.

What about cutting a hole in the front for a stage 3 turbo? New tranny and engine mounts?
