New Engine + Old Trans= Delay into Drive

The title pretty much says it all. Just got the car back and it takes about 3 second for it to grab the gear and idle forward. Car is an automatic and did not have this problem before the engine swap. Could anything have been installed impoperly to cause this? The car was not warmed up, could this be a factor with the trans? I need to know ASAP, because I am going back to school on Saturday, and I dont want my trans to fail in the middle of nowhere on I-57.

First check the fluid.

Since the fluid is added through the same port that the dipstick goes in, sometimes the recently added fluid in the tube causes an incorrect reading on the dipstick.

So am I checking for low fluid or excess fluid?
You have kinda confused me as to what you are suggesting.

Thanks Bill.
I took the car out today to meet up with some friends at the mall. It seemed like the trans was acting up. It wouldnt shift properly and it was very jerky. The idle speed is also very low, under 500 at times, not near the 700-750 that it was before the swap. Is the transmission possibly causing the engine to act funny? By not letting it rev or anything. I gunned it pretty hard and it felt like the engine ran out of power around 5k rpm. Again, old engine did not do this. any and all help would be good. I will start off with having them change the trans fluid. any guess as to how long it takes?

I wonder if they have stuffed up the adjustment of the TPS (throttle position sensor), when they changed the engine? Check out the how too. for further info.

I would think that the line pressure is low. I would suspect the pump may have been damaged, when they fitted the engine. The torque converter torus, may have been damaged also, in the same process.

The pumps low pressure causing the box problems, the torus causing the performance loss.

When you take it back, don't tell them what to do, you may be wrong.
Ask them to fix the two problems. You may have to point them in the direction of the pump, and torus being the cause, but let them find the trouble and fix it.

Harvey.

When you complain, you could have a problem establishing that the transmission was in fact OK before the engine was changed. Establish a witness and go with guns loaded.
