Painting entire car.

Anybody here ever painted their entire SVX? If so can you post prices?
Can someone recommend a quality shop in CT?

I can't recommend a shop for you (except absolutely no MACO type places). However, for a good job you should expect to pay at least $3,000. Could be a bit less, and easily can be much more.

It also would depend if they did any dent removal or just sanded and painted. If it is the same color, it would be a little less because if they had to do the engine compartment, trunk etc., it would take a lot more. I would say that $2,500 to $3,500 for a quality job. Remember that some paint is much more expensive. The pearl paints take 3 steps and that is much more expensive. I had my Pearl White painted and the paint alone was almost $1,000.

I recently took my car to a local guy recommended by my mechanic, intending to get an estimate for repainting. (Actually, for wet-sanding and clearcoating.) He said he no longer does paint jobs at all; just collision repair, adding that the former were "more trouble than they're worth." Maybe folks who've come to him for paint jobs have been too particular. I've heard unfavorable reports on other body shops around here and let the project slide to the back burner for now.

I was hoping to get away with a wet sand and compound on my 95.
After sanding and compounding I still have a bunch of alligator cracks that are not looking so good. The roof looks like Naugahyde.

I am going to give a shot at Liquid Glass and hope it fills in all the gaps. I have no one around here I could find a recommendation on either.

BurgundyBeast- Where did you pick up your paint? NAPA is the only place around here that sells it.

I had my 95 LSI repainted about 2 years ago using Dupont paint with a 7 year fade, orange peel, and delaminate warranty. It included several clear topcoats. No body reapair needed except after stripping old hood a prior bondo was found and i had it fixed again. All rubber gaskets (door handle, body panel where side logo is, etc) were removed and all plastic panels and bumpers removed for painting off the car. At that time I also had all headlights replaced as well as operable side windows and windshield from scrathes and stone pits. I painted it the same color. There are pics in my locker. I had the luxury of leaving the car there for nearly 6 weeks to do work between other jobs to keep cost down. Cost was $3300.

PS I am about to post it for seale on the the forum once fall arrives as I will retire in january and do not need 3 cars.

What I bought was a complete urethane paint kit off ebay from a seller named sshoppersinc (or something like that), but I changed from Claret to Blue, so getting a matching color wasn't important. The paint I got is of pretty good quality, and all of my flaws come along with the steep learning curve of painting. If I did another car it would probably turn out much better.

Generally speaking your best bet is to let a local Subaru dealer paint the car to factory specs.

I don't know of any subie dealer that paints, and I wouldn't even want to see the rediculous price they'd come up with for it.

If you want a good paintjob follow the following steps.

1) Get a list of every body shop in the area.
2) Go to each one and talk to their sales rep, or if you can, the actual paint specialist.
3) ask for a list of recent clients and call them to inspect work or just get feedback on how the work was done.
4) figure out which REPUTABLE place will get it done for a price you'd like.. 5) Make sure there is some sort of warranty, and make sure that it is done completely right from the get go. Don't even take your car back until its perfect to your satisfaction.

Expect this to cost 2500 or so for a same or similar color, and 3500-4000 for a complete color change. and ALWAYS use good paint. don't take the cheap option on paint because why would not you spend 300$ more, when you're already spending 2500$ on labor???

Ditto. I've seen Subie dealers that don't even have repair bays or a parts department, much less a paint & body shop.

I went to this local bodyshop with a good reutation and I was talking to a guy that works there and he does painting on the side so he's much cheaper, except that he only works on his one day off but that's ok since i'm not in a rush for the work.

I'm doing the same OEM color Silver and black top. How much are you paying for the paint job? Is the entire car being painted?
