Hmmm….rarer than a Porsche 911!

We all know that our SVXs are extremely rare, and the auto media has often compared them to the Porsche 911 due to the flat 6 powerplant in both cars. Decided to find out just how rare our cars are compared to 911s made over the same production period.

Subaru SVX

1991 1513 (’92 model sold in ’91)
1992 3667
1993 3859
1994 1666
1995 1801
1996 1111
1997 640
Total 14,257 (courtesy http://www.cars101.com/subaru_svx.html)

Porsche 911

(focusing only on 993 models produced between ’94-’97)
1994 2677
1995 7857
1996 5823
1997 7129
Total 23,486 (courtesy http://p-car.com/production.html)

*Note – Porsche production numbers are for both the Carerra coupe & cabriolet sold in North America

Treat your SVXs well folks. They were a rare gem when brand new - and becoming even more rare each day!

Looking over my numbers...

...total production for the '94-'97 993's should be higher than the 23,486 I stated as I didn't include Targa or Turbo models! If they were included, the total would increase by almost another 3,500.

If we looked at the 964 Porsche 911s produced in the '92-'93 model years, then the total would climb again by at least another 10,000... (can't find north america specific production numbers)

-Chike

P.S. This is a great link to read up about the 911's of yore!

That takes price into consideration, and the SVX and Porsche 911 were never cross-shopped by potential buyers.

Both cars have devoted, dedicated followers. Both cars showcased the pinnacle of each manufacturer's technology at the time.

Try and find a Porsche owner who owns 9 like ensteele!

Good job Chike. Your right no cross shops the SVX and a 911. I loved my SVX, but the 911 is an automotive icon that few cars can even come close to. Everyone knows what it is when they see it. Be a 1973 RS or a 2004 Carerra C4S. It would have been nice to see what a second gen SVX could have been like.

Where I live, I see a lot more 911s on the road in the summer than SVXs. And, this winter, I'm really looking forward to taking my AWD SVX up the mountains skiing while the 911s are, well, parked. In my part of the country, if a sports car isn't AWD, it's parked for 6 months of the year.

The other reason I was drawn to the SVX rather than Porsche (or similar) was due to the rarity and uniqueness. I always tell my buddies with their Porsches, BMWs, Hummers, Mustangs or whatever that I could go out this afternoon, write a cheque and have a car exactely like theirs. They can't say the same about mine.

To each his/her own. I think we all get a dream about what car or kind of car we want to own and then run with it. The fun is not only in driving the cars but also in finding just the right one.

Agreed. The Porsche 911 is an automotive icon that's always used as the performance yard-stick.

I must say that my wife and I have made a promise to each other to own a Porsche sometime in our lifetime. They're amazing cars, extremely reliable for the performance league their in, and second-to-none!

Just amazing to put the rarity of our cars into perspective. Treat an SVX like a 4K car, and it'll treat you no better. See the SVX as the 30K grand-touring performance car it was when new, and you'll quickly realize that there's no equal.

Earl should be an example to us all. His recent restoration of a totalled '93 SVX inspired me to research and write this post. Let's keep these cars on the road guys & gals!

That pearlwhite pic you showed. That's exactly the same pic I saved
on my computer 4 yrs ago....while I was looking for an SVX. One of my
favorite pics...

Let's try our best to take good care of our "porsches" ...............
It's a 'pretty' complete car.

Chike,
Then again, how many people - short of Bill Gates and other assorted Billion/Millionaires - have the $$ to have 9 911s in the same shape as Earl's 9 SVXes...
