Power Steering High Pressure Hose replacement

Has anybody done this ? If so do i need any special tools ? I've got the basic sockets, wrenches etc. Do i need some kind of mega crimping tool ?

No special tools needed. Just the regular stuff. It is not really complex to do. Good luck.

If you're getting a hose made (like I did) they do use a monster crimping tool. Because you reuse the ends I doubt you'll be able to make more than one replacement without having to buy an actual Subaru OEM part.

I wish I could remember how much it cost to have the hose made.

You mean if i buy the OEM part, it comes with the metal ends with the crimping already done ? that would defenitely make a lot easier.
Also before i go and buy the part and tear into it, the leak is from a hole the size of a pin hole. Is there a way of "patching" it ? Just trying to avoid spending $$ and a bunch of time.

Thanks

I doubt the hose could be patched. Besides, if it's original, the whole thing is likely deteroriating, and that pinhole, the first of many to come ('til it finally blows).

If you know of a shop that custom-fabricates hydraulic hose, they may well be able to make you a PS hose for less than you'll spend at Subaru.

There's no way to patch it. The hose withstands up to 2500psi. Check out the parts here.

I just replaced mine though the dealership parts counter. I don't like to mess around with important hoses.

Granted, you can't clamp-on some hose cut from a spool at a hardware store and head down the road. To clarify, when I suggested the possibility of custom fabrication, I meant by a shop specializing in high-pressure hydraulic hoses. I had this done for my old Mustang years ago, but I've no idea if pricing would be competitive. Still, it's an option that's worth a look if you're trying to save a buck or two.

I also noticed that the hose they used is less restrictive than the OEM hose. (Larger inner diameter)
