Well, if the transmission works, but the RWD doesn't, it would sound to me like a differential failure, or something of that sort. Perhaps Eddycat will pop in and clarify for us. Otherwise, I'd say it's 2 failures.
It depends on who rebuilt the thing. If Cletus did it, you can't fault the transmission. Just ask Aredub!

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
92 & 94 Trannys

My 92 LS -Tour had a bad tranny when I purchased it( along with BOTH rear wheel bearings bad) I replaced it with a Legacy Trans, but with the SVX front diff, the front axle bearing failed after about 1500 miles(which is in the original front diff with 148k miles on it) Now it's in the process of a 5-speed swap.
My 94 SVX-L FWD has 86k on it with no failures, I don't think the FWD's have nearly as much failure problem, which is why it's my day to day driver.

Good Poll...

At this point most of the people have responded with 39-92's voted. Only 2-93's (both without failure) and 8-94's.

I hope the second fix is a whole lot better than the first. How many miles out of the 2nd tranny? I have 2 SVX's, tranny went out at 70000 on one. The other is at 76700, no signs of trouble.

I don't know exactly when my tranny was rebuilt but I believe it to be in the past year. As I'm learnig with my '92 @ 72K, the rearend not working is not necessarily the rear diff. The rear drive on mine is slipping bad and chatters like hell when it engages. I took it to my local dealer and the tech went for a test drive in the rain. When we got back to the shop he showed me one that he had been working on and showed me the rear drive clutch that is bolted to the rear of the tranny. It is just a wet clutch pack (just like in most motorcycles) that has the pressure regulated by a little controller inside. My tranny was rebuilt before I bought it but I think it was just that...rebuilt, not replaced. It is very probable that when yours was rebuilt they neglected to replace the clutch pack, or it's pressure controller in the rear of the tranny. That piece just bolts to the back of the tranny and might be a very easy job to replace the cluch. He also said that the rear diffs themselves rarely if ever fail.

Just a thought that might be of some value to you. Hope it is
