hey nvrmore...
you would really like my wife's 2000 1.8T GTI. the car weighs next to nothing and the little turbo puts out 150hp. this is the same motor found in the audi tt that puts out 180hp. you would not believe the mods available for the car. eventually, once the warranty is gone i will begin modding it. bigger wheels, custom exhaust, cold air intake, possibly a bigger turbo and addition of an intercooler, etc. there is too much to list. it is black with black leather and loaded with a sunroof, and power everything. really a nice car and embarrasingly enough almost as quick as the SVX 0-60. 5-60 i kill the car but from a dead stop that little GTI is a rocket, i barely win. once past 60mph the SVX shows why Subaru chose the H-6 because i am just gone.

A quick story for Ryan & other "82 Scirocco owners. I bought one about 10 years ago for my daughter's High School grad gift. She totalled it within 30 days (not her fault), & I bought another one with the insurance money. I semi-inherited it during her freshman year at college, when cars were verboten. I had to pick her & her girlfriend up for spring break that year & decided to drive it to Charlottesville, VA from Baltimore to give it some "exercise". About 60 miles into this trip, I stopped for coffee, got back in, put it in reverse. NOTHING! The shifter felt like wasn't connected to anything it was previously connected to. Gradually I found "a " forward gear, (it was third) then another (forth). Story was, the plastic linkage popped out of a connecting socket, so I could move the lever up & down (3 & 4) but nowhere else. I drove this way, in the rain to Charlottesville, picked up the girls who loaded the car down with the typical 300lbs. of crap they "needed" for a 2 week break, & drove back to Baltimore during rush hour (still raining) around the DC beltway, a trip of over 200 miles, with lots of start & stop, mentally begging everyone not to make me come to full stop, up hill with 600lbs. of flesh & junk aboard. Somehow, we made it. I later popped in a linkage salvaged off the original totalled car, & all was fine. The clutch lived through this ordeal for another 8 years, & as far as I know, the car is still on the road.
It was a primitive car by today's standards, but it was amazing what fun you could have with 74 HP, & a nice gearbox. Ron.

Cool, another SVX & VW family
My wife drives the SVX and I have a 2001.5 Passat Variant (station wagon) with the 1.8T and a five speed. I've gotta agree with you about the take-off as I have the 170hp version of the 1.8T. It leaps when you get on it.
BTW, she has already identified the Audi TT as her next vehicle (after completion of law school). I told her it needed to be the 225hp, quattro version and she was OK with that.

my svx is pretty quick. she usually leaves right with me off the line then her turbo quicks in and she leaves me just briefly. but once i am coming out of second into third i am passing her. after that she is really meat because the SVX is awesome at speed.

there was an article.....
in sport compact car magazine about some guy in sweden or finland that built a black gti like my wife's up to over 900hp. it was basically custom built from the ground up and pushing over 40psi of boost. the car looked great though because he flared out all of the fenders.

8V-16V
Quote:
8V's over here were usually rated at 112 HP or so. Memory tells me the 16V was about 125 or 128, but I would accept your figure. In the early 80's neither had a cat in Europe. I have seen tests that suggest Ryan's figure of 104 would be about right for an American spec car with emissions strangulation. Tuners here and in the UK love these engines[and in Deutchland also]. I have seen multi tests using dynos where all of the stock engines were making more than the official VW figure before tuning. As against that, Japanese HP figures seem to err on the side of optimism for smaller cars, but can be understated for the big muthas that "restrain" themselves to the government 280 hp limit. Joe

Renault Fan - Hey Joe!
Heh-heh. My mom had an R15 for a while as I was growing up. Probably in the range of '73 or '74. It was bright yellow, and pretty cool for a mom-mobile, I thought.
The Gordini was the R17, at least here in the US. I honestly don't know if the Gordini was a special package R17, or if they just called them all R17 Gordini's. I had Momo 'web' style wheels on it, similar to BMW wheels. My girlfriend at the time had a Renault LeCar. We, ummm, managed to pass the time in that car a few times. I couldn't do that now, of course, although I'd be willing to try! I just recently got in contact with her via e-mail after about 18 years. She said every time she sees a LeCar (which couldn't be much) she thinks of me. Isn't that sweet?

My "acrobatics" were performed in my Mom's red VW fastback. I never knew just how "unbendable" those seatbelt buckles poking up from between those front buckets were, until . . . . Oh, never mind. It's too late to flash back.

Dream Cars
I regularly review Ebay and autotrader for the big three dream cars of my life: the R17 Gordini, Lotus Europa, and Lancia Scorpion. Hopefully I will never be fool enough to buy one.
I was amazed to find that any car you ever wanted in your life is available on these sites. Well, I guess I'll go look again now.... |

I miss the 50's vintage Rambler American station wagon that my wife had when we got married. Looked sort of like an upside down bathtub on wheels, flat-head six and 3 speed manual. Funky little car - we both loved it. It was stolen ( story all in itself), and I still miss it.
