Angry Bad Luck

Hi all, im new here. I've had the worst luck with my SVX the past few days. I recently took it to my local shop to get some things done (timing belt, tires, alignment, timing belt tensioner) when i picked it up yesterday everything seemed normal and it was running great (good considering that its at 143,668) 10 min after leaving the shop my car just QUITS running so i figure the timing belt broke because the mechanic overtigntened it or something to that nature (so i wouldn't have to pay for it)
BUt, when i call this morning to see what the problem was with it, he said my crankshaft sensors had gone bad and it would be like 600-700 bucks to get that fixed. RIGHT after i had just payed 1075 to get all that other stuff fixed. SO is there anything else that you guys know of that wears out or breaks aroun my mileage(143,668), any help would be greatly appreciated
Travis

It seems rather odd that the sensors all gave up just after the car was in for service and they just had it. My first question is - what kind of shop is it. Do they know about SVXes? Is it a Subaru Shop, or other? What kind of reputation do they have? Can you trust them that that is really what the problem is and that it wasn't their mess up? I don't know whether that is common, but it seems a little fishy to me that this happened that way. Maybe someone else will jump in here.

Sorry to meet under these conditions.

Hi Travis and welcome to SVX land.

That is really no fun getting the car fixed to have it breakdown. The crank angle sensors are in the middle of the engine above the crank pulley. Maybe a wire broke off the sensor? Did the CEL come on?

With that type of mileage consider replacement of: water pump, oil pump, crank seal, cam seals, crank pulley, idler pulley for ac and ps, radiator, ac compressor, knock sensors, O2 sensors, ps pump, rack, tie rods, alternator, front axles, flex plate, TPS, MAF, valve cover gaskets and auto transmission. Looks like a lot huh? Don't be overwhelmed by it. There is a lot of help available here and it's all searchable. Most of these items give some warning before going. You can recall problem codes from the cars computers if you got a 92 to 95?(or is it 96?)

It seems strange for the crank angle sensors to quit like you say. I keep thinging the connector came undone or has a bad connection or loose or something. Try searching on the subject.

Thanks guys, its a 1993
I already had the oil pump replaced
and the shop I take it to is a BP with a subaru specialist that has worked on many svx's and is very trust worthy. I just think that i am having bad luck with it.

Crank sensor is about $200, it's replacement is a 15 minute job (remove drive belt, swing alternator and you have access to it) -
the $600 estimate means run away from these guys and never come back.
