5 speed swap questions.

I'm trying to get a total (estimated) cost of a 5 speed swap. I'm looking to use a junk yard legacy cable transmission which I know will cost me $117 plus tax and $10 core charge. I'm gonna get a cheap ACT clutch and fly wheel, which I can get for around $200. My main concern is the modifications to the pedal assembly, custom tranny cross member, shift linkage, and drive shaft. Does anyone have an idea of what all the fabrication would cost?

Try pm'ing Johnybeas, I had thought at one point he was going to make a kit.

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

While your there get the pedal set. I would not go with a cheap clutch and pressure plate. I use to tear stock clutches up in my 1991 turbo Sport Sedan and it was 1/2 the HP. You need the drive shaft too while u are shopping . Get a shopping listfrom the How to Documents Section above.

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

The driveshaft you need may not be (most likely won't be) the driveshaft that's in the car you pull the trans from. Search driveshaft and you'll find a thread that has all the measurements you need.

The shift linkage you just have to have extended a couple inches, but that requires a welder. You will also need a rear bushing and mount for the shift linkage.

The guy who made my crossmember charged ~$300. I would definitely try and get Johnybeas to make you the crossmember and shift linkage.

*Make sure the trans works as well as you can before you take it out of the car.*

Get the rear end out of the same car so you will know 100% that it's the right ratio.

Get the pedals too. All 3, not just the left two.

Get a clutch that's rated for at least the stock SVX torque. Idk if the ACT one is good enough or not. Link or part number?

Also I missed a call from you last night, everything good?

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

Everythings good man. I'm having trouble finding a clutch, apparently the one I was looking at was the wrong one. Can I use an aftermarket clutch for a newer model impreza or legacy with an older cable tranny?

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

Not if it's a pull-type clutch and you need a push-type. There are other differences too, but that's the big one. I'd look on nasioc or one of the other big general Subaru sites if I were you. When you switch to an M/T those sites suddenly become very useful.

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

I used a Legacy Transmission (92 NA) and then bought a flywheel and clutch for the same. I had Sixstates distributors rebuild my friction disk with Ceramic material. Hasn't slipped on me yet (5 years some hard driving)

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

That's a good option. Is it a push or pull type clutch?

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

it is a push style clutch ( IIRC the only pull style were some years WRX and the 6spd STI trans's)

All NA Subarus are one style, and all Turbo Subaru cars are the other..

I "Think" the NA's are "Push", and the Turbos are "Pull"...but I get it mixed up sometimes...

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

You are mistaken huck, I have an 06 (i believe) WRX trans sitting in my bay, it is a push style.

Re: 5 speed swap questions.

I've never had hold of a Turbo Transmission, but everything I've read on them say that all the Turbo Trans have a Pull Style Clutch set up....
