TOYOTA TECHS! need help with prius

2004 Prius, 150k miles.

Ok, I know there is a wheel bearing going out, and i can handle that one no problem.

But, there is a similar noise being made whenever the gas engine is running. It is rpm related, as it does it in park but will get louder as the rpms increase. It seems like the sound is coming from the back end of the car. Any ideas what this could be? I am going to take the car for a test drive when I get a chance, so I can provide more specific symptoms.

Find out if something is hitting the exhaust. That's about all it could be.

Ya, it is kind of baffling. I think she may be mistaking the origin of the sound for the wheel bearing that I heard last time I drove it. I am merely going off what she told me. I heard the strange sound once but the thing makes so many odd noises it is tough to tell what is supposed to be there sometimes

It is probably coming from the front. If that is the case, does it sound like anything in particular to you, Nifty?

Well, after digging around I found that the bucket in the back side of the car (where the spare tire sits) was rattling around something fierce. Did not fix it, but that is definitely the culprit. Made a lot of noise for some reason.

But that wheel bearing seems like it is the front passenger side. Wheel bearings on this car should be a piece of cake. Thanks for the help NiftySVX, even though it turned out to be something ridiculous.

No but I often expect to find a "manufactured by fisher-price" sticker on it.

Ya, it is kind of a strange car. I get a lot of weird looks in it, thats for sure. Imagine a 21 year old male getting out of a prius at the machine shop....
